question How many diapers do you have in your rotation? (messybee)
Posted: 12:23:09 pm on 9/21/2009 Modified: Never

I have 25 one size diapers and 4 one size stay dry diapers, and that doesn't seem to be enough.  I seem to be doing diapers every night so that I have enough to get through the next day.  Every time I wash there is about 16 diapers. So for 2 days I would need 32 or more.  I notice that alot of people selling diapers only have 12 or 24 diapers.  Do these people wash every day or am I changing way to often?  Should I just buy more diapers?  My little one is almost 1 month old will this slow down?  I can't imagine the diapers will get less wet as he gets older so I would think i would be changing more often not less as the months go on.

16 diapers in one 24 hour period is a little above average (your so-called average newborn will usually go through 10-12 diapers in a day) but if you're ok changing that many and it works for then there's no reason to change anything. Your little ones skin can only benefit...

And you will indeed find that the number of diapers goes down significantly as your baby gets older. Usually toddlers go through approx. 5-7 diapers per day. This is due to a number of factors. First newborns tend to poop much more often (especially if you're nursing) than do older babies and toddlers. Newborns can poop every hour sometimes, this will normally drastically diminish to somewhere between 4 times a day to once a week (for a breastfed baby this is totally normal) after the first 6-8 weeks. Newborns also tend to pee more frequently, toddlers will pee larger amounts but less often. Plus as your baby starts solids he/she will pee less often (less liquids in their diet) and probably poop less often (poop changes consistancy and frequency once solids start). Also, once your baby stops pooping at night you can usually stop changing (either stop altogether at night or at the very lest reduce the frequency) by increasing the absorbancy in the diaper (liners etc...)

So basically it's up to you. 29 diapers is a good number so personally I'd recomend waiting a little while just to be sure since your changes are indeed likely to diminish. That said, many people have more than that to either allow them to wash only every 3 days and/or to allow them more time in order to line dry their diapers.

Karen.

It all depends on your baby - I'm finding I'm going through way more diapers this time around because my DS is EXTREMELY picky about being wet. He lets me know (well cries) every time he pees at all, and isn't really happy until he's been changed. My DS#1 on the other hand would quite cheerfully run around with a messy diaper all day and never complain. But having said that the average number of diapers needed for a 24 hr period is 10-12. I tend to think of it this way though - if they are having a LOT of wet diapers a) they are well hydrated and b) if they are wanting to be changed every time, who knows, maybe potty training will be easier.
Oh, and yes it does slow down because as they get older they have more bladder control, and they are going longer between times. When they do go it will be more, just less frequently.

I agree with the previous posters, and here is my personal story to add to it... When DS was that age, I used about 14 diapers a day. I had purchased 12 XS and 24 OS Sandy's, thinking that by the time we were done with the XS, 24 would be enough. At 2 months, though, he was already too big for the XS and I ended up buying 12 more OS because 24 just wasn't enough for us. We were still using more than 12 a day, and although we washed diapers every day, we needed about a 2-day supply because of the drying time of the bamboo. So we bought an extra 12 OS.

Now that my son is 2, I use about 7-8 a day and wash every two days. 36 diapers is wayyyyy too many, but I figure they'll get less use out of them and will work for our next LO...

hello. i have 12 cotton os, 7 sd os, and 6 bamboo os dipes. i wash roughly every 3 to 5 days because my ds does not go through that many in a day. he is 7 months old. he goes through 5 or 7 per day depending on the frequency of his bowel movements. despite the long stretches between washings, my dipes are still in excellent condition besides a little bit of poop staining. his skin is much healthier as well with these dipes. he really does not mind wetness at all, but will fuss when he is poopy.

Newborns do go through a lot of diapers at the start... you may want to have a dozen prefolds on hand to use when you run out.  A prefold with a snappi and a small AF cover is so easy and at only aobut $2 each, it's a cheap solution to the problem of running out of diapers with a newborn.

I would say that as the baby sleeps longer during the day and at night, you will have to change less.  With my 8 month old, I find 30 MEOS is the perfect number for me and I wash every 2-3 days.

good luck!

I like having lots (about 32) because I can leave one in the car, two in the diaper bag, some upstairs, some downstairs, some on the drying rack waiting to be put away, some at daycare....

I've found 25 diapers to be a good number for me, washing every 2, days at first and then up to 3.5 days when baby is older.  I do line-dry as well, so almost have to add a day for that, but never had to leave diapers with a caregiver or have more than one at a time in the diaper bag (so didn't have to factor those in).

While the diaper use definitely slows down, I'm wondering, messybee, what determines how often you change.  If most of these changes are poop diapers (my DS#1 went with every feed for several months, so I know it's possible!), then ignore the question because those should always be changed asap.  If, however, you're changing every time baby wets, you probably don't need to do that.  It doesn't hurt baby to have a wet diaper for a little while (and can be almost impossible to prevent anyway, depending on pee patterns, since newborns tend to pee a little bit very frequently), unless baby seems to mind it (most don't)  Most of us would say 1.5-2 hours would be a good changing interval if the diapers are just wet and baby is awake.  Every 1.5 hours would get you 16 diapers per day, but then I'm guessing there will be intervals where baby is asleep so goes a bit longer, etc.
It's definitely better to change more often than not often enough, but I'm mentioning this only in case you are making more work for yourself by trying for constant dryness.

I have 24 OS + 6 AIO in my rotation.  I bought my stash when DS was 4 months old.  Since then he goes through 8-12 diapers a day.  I wash nightly and line dry.  However, I used a diaper service before that and I did go through about 20 diapers a day because they would provide me about 60-80 diapers a week but I would request or pick up more diapers so that I was using about 120-140 per week!  So I believe you that you are going through lots and don't have enough...OK, let me check my records (I recorded everything the first few months - I'm crazy, I know.)  So as I said, I was going through up to 140 diapers per week or 20 a day the first month!  Near the end of 2 months, we were slowing to 110 diapers per week or almost 16 diapers a day.  3 months - 90 diapers per week or 13 diapers a day.  4 months - 70 diapers per week or 10 a day.  Can you wash and perhaps machine dry every day so that your turnover is quick so that you don't have to buy more?  If the laundry is too much, then perhaps you may need to consider more diapers...  As you can see, diaper changes should happen less since they will wet less but they will be heavier dipes.
Jo - my DS used to cry when he was wet too!  However, he doesn't cry anymore.    I think he has gotten used to a wet diaper.  I thought he would potty train easy too but they say the best time for infant potty training is between birth and six months and he is now 9 months so I've missed the boat.  Are you considering infant potty training?  If so, I think you should do it while your baby is still crying when they are wet.  Otherwise, I think I will have to wait now...if my next baby cries when he/she is wet, then I might try infant potty training.

meisiu - I have done a little bit of with the infant potty training. I admit, I haven't really gone for it a 100% just because of the time required. I do put him on the potty though, and if I catch him first thing in the morning or right after a nap he'll often pee for me. In fact, he pees on the potty better than my 2 yr old does. lol. I really should work with him a bit more...he's four months already. boy does time ever fly by with a new baby!

Jo - When we were on vacation at 6 months, I would put him on the toilet in the morning, after naps and such and he did pee for me!  I thought it was awesome.  The best was when I was in a grungy restaurant bathroom with no change table and instead of him being on the floor the entire time (on a change pad), I was able to have him pee into the toilet.  And it's nice to save a diaper.  Good luck!
