where to get swim diapers and cloth wipes? (Fire Dancer)

hi. we are moving to a gated apartment complex in about a week. i asked my dh about how i am going to take john in the pool there. he answered, "how you always do." well here is the thing. i have taken him into my father's girlfriend's pool, and my friend's pool in the buff once i know that he has done his 2 duties for the day. the problem is, i do not know how the management at our complex would feel about me taking him in the pool without a swim diaper on even though he does not urinate or deficate in the water. if they would like me to use a swim diaper, where can i get reusable ones and what is the pricing on those? also, i would love to start using cloth wipes. what is the best way to go about this? if i go that route, is there any way that i can get the wipes smelling nice? or should i just soak them in water. can i use a whipes warmer meant for disposable wipes?

Most likely management will insist on a swim diaper, they just can't take any chances and usually there are even laws for public pools. ME sells cute swim diapers and I liked them a lot. You can also usually get some type of reusable swim diaper in many 'regular' stores, even places like Wal-Mart will usually carry a brand or two.

You could even use a regular cloth diaper cover provided it's snug enough (all any swim diaper can ever do is hold poop inside, no diaper can absorb anything once in the water as it's automatically saturated). Regular covers aren't the best because they can also hold a significant amount of water inside but they can work in a pinch.

Another interesting option is to use disposable swim diapers and just reuse them. They're tough enough that you can actually rinse them out/wash them (by hand of course) after each use and reuse them several times. Now, obviously I wouldn't recomend doing this with a poopy swim diaper, not only would that be pretty yucky but I'm not sure you could get it clean enough. But it can be cheaper in the long run especially if you only use them occasionally or if your little is between sizes.

Cloth wipes are great, they actually work much much better than disposable ones and they're less trouble because you don't have to figure out how to handle them while you're getting the little one dressed again and have a chance to throw them out. They just go straight in the pail with the diaper, no rinsing even necessary!

As for where to get them, well you can get really nice ones from ME again (or many cloth diapering stores/companies, many sell their own). Personally though I only ever used regular washcloths for the job. Much cheaper than buying actual cloth diapering wipes and work pretty much just as well. What kind people like varies but personally I just got some cheap washcloths at the dollar store, I didn't want the really thick fancy ones that come in good sets.

As for smell and warmth, yup you absolutly can. There are lots of cloth wipes recipes floating around the net for solutions that smell nice and are soothing on the skin. You can even buy spray bottles already made or even small little squares that you can melt and add to water! Or many just use plain water, either straight from the tap or from a water bottle they keep in their change area. Wipes warmers should work well too, just sometimes you have to fold the wipes a specific way to get them to fit. Only thing to watch out for is that most of these recipes don't have preservatives so you they may get musty smelling if left out for too long.

Karen.

ok the idea for swim dipes sounds ok. can i use an af cover without a diaper on? i was actually thinking about just putting him in his regular old cotton meos with the diaper cover on in the pool. the idea for cloth wipes sounds great. thanks.

I wouldn't even bother with the diaper at all except maybe to use to get him from the changeroom to the pool. Once in the water the dipaer will be instantly saturated and all it will do is weigh him down. Be prepared though that management may have an issue with this in terms that it's not an 'official' swim diaper. They might not but it's hard to say, some even make trouble if you use a reusable swim diaper instead of the disposable ones. Not everyone is educated aobut this stuff and all they know are the disposable ones so they question anything else.

yep the only reason that some public places have issues with reusable diapers is because this is a "throw away" society. and i suppose that they do not think that reusable ones are as "sanatary" as throw away ones. lol, nothing, not even disposable products, are sanatary.

I remember seeing about a month ago that the magazine "One Step Ahead" had their reusable swim diapers on sale (30% off), these meet all public pool standards. I think you can pick them up for under $10. We got DS a reusable swim dipe at our local mom and pop children's store. It works great and that was all he needed (no suit over top), we would just put on one of those surf tops and he was good to go.

I would assume that most places would insist that a baby have a swim diaper on, although I doubt most people would be inspecting closely as to what exactly that diaper is.

Although they might not be around any more (if they are, probably pretty cheap), places like Target sell baby swimsuit/diapers for $5-10.  They are usually by the onesies/socks rather than on the hanging racks.
I used one by Kushies which was quite nice:  http://www.kushiesonline.com/Swim-Diaper-p/c625-c628.htm.
It was basically velcro but also had ties in the front.  It has a slim terry pad in the base, mostly just for those quick pees on the way to the pool.  Although DS#1 never pooped in the pool, DS#2 put this suit to the test, and I'm happy to report that it passed.  I went with the Kushies one because they are very adjustable and fit a large size range.  Even if you can't find something easily locally, if you find decent shipping online, a reusable diaper pays for itself pretty quickly, given the cost of the disposables.

Re. cloth wipes, I really do think they're easier to use with cloth diapers than disposable wipes, because as Karen said, they just go into the pail with the diapers--and they do a better job of wiping up the poop, rather than smearing it as disposable wipes often seem to.  I always used the cheapo baby washcloths that are something like 4/$1 at Walmart.  I fold them into quarters and keep a tub with a bit of plain water in it on the changing table.  I wet only one wipe at a time to avoid problems with getting musty.  The water is room temp, so than can be a bit chilly in the winter, but the boys haven't really seemed to mind.

You can get shirts, long and short sleeve, that have sun protection (often a 50 factor or so).  I'm not sure what the difference is between the ones called swim shirts and the ones called rash guards, but the rash guard name comes from its being worn while surfing, I believe.

I second that about Kushies swim diapers.  The ones specifically for girls even have a top attached!  So cute!  Just avoid the all plastic, non adjustable ones at Wal-Mart.  FOr a few dollars more you can get one that's way better.

I bought 2 ME swim diapers from the buy and sell forum here and I would recommend them.  All the public pools here require a disposable dipe and plastic pant so I put my ME swim dipe over a disposable dipe.  ME swim dipe is easily adjustable and easier to put on since it has snaps than the disposable dipe and the Gabby's plastic pant that they sell at the swimming pools which are elastic.  Now, I'm not putting Gabby's down since they closed their physical store and went completely to online sales as I was able to score a bunch of cloth wipes from them at clearance prices.  I fold all the wipes so that they pop up from a disposable wipes box.  I keep a small container on the change table of a wipes recipe (almond oil, baby wash, lavendar oil) so I dip the wipe in this each time.  Disposable or cloth wipe, I throw them into the diaper pail.  (DH prefers disposable wipes.)

wow. requiring disposable swim diapers? reusables are just as good. anyway i asked the office woman about the pool policy for infants, and she said that the babies are not required to wear swim diapers. but yes, a pool that requires only disposable diapers, the people who run that pool might be misinformed about cloth supposedly not containing poops as well as the disposables. does anyone know if disposable swim diapers contain toxic substances like regular disposables do? minus the gell, that is.
