question Inner thigh chaffe (Jmackison)
Posted: 8:51:48 pm on 10/2/2009 Modified: Never

Our nearly 6 mos. old, 15 lbs, b-fed baby girl is starting to get some red thigh chaffing where dipe falls into her michelin creases. We have tried to adjust where the leg hole falls, but it always works its way to the crease. We use MEOS folded over in front w/ cover. Seems to be alot of fabric gathered esp. now that she is more active....any ideas, comments?
Thanks...

Same experience here. In our case, the chafing was caused primarily from the covers as opposed to the MEOS. I stopped using the pul covers that have binding around the leg elastics. I switched to fleece covers (stacinator and sugar peas) which fit much looser. They are certainly not as waterproof as pul but it has minimized the leg chafing considerably. With fleece, I just have to change her diaper more frequently and accept that there will be a bit of humidity transferred to her clothes. Also, I used "northern essence" diaper rash salve - safe for cloth diapers and works like magic.

Maybe try either the next size up cover or playing with how you fasten them. Either looser or tighter could help. Tighter seems counterintuitive and there's no guarantee it'll help but it is possible that if a cover is too loose it increases movement, hence increases friction on the skin. Same with the diaper itself, play with the snap settings and maybe even folded or not folded.

Another thought is maybe think about detergent build-up or detergent sensitivity. Sometimes it could be happening just at that spot just because that's where there's the most rubbing or general contact. Maybe giving an extra rinse if you don't already, or think about switching detergents. Worth a shot, especially if you've recently switched.

HTH,
Karen.

Thanks, we tightened up the one leg hole and kinda moved the whole mess up tighter to the groin, Seems to help...

I know for a little while, I didn't like how the diaper and diaper cover ended on the middle of the thigh so I would tuck the diaper inwards and pull the diaper leg up more as well so that it was in the crease instead of on the thigh.  I also find the rikki covers have more of a gussetted leg so the thickness between the legs is less wide compared to the AF covers...but I think there will always be a lot of fabric.  I don't think the babies really notice anyway.  Don't know if that really makes sense or answers your question...just my comments.
