Dear All,

I am new to the whole CD things and I am from Hong Kong. CDing is not very popular here and resources are also very limited so that your advice on the following are highly appreciated:-

1. After reading thru topics related to the pail, i decided to use dry pail. I am wondering is that just put the used CDs right into the wet bag without dunking or rinsing? Will the stains be washed off in the washing machine? (I am exclusively BF my 3 weeks old baby)

2.My baby has been crying since I used the CDs, have anyone have similar problems? (may be the CD is a bit thick that making him feel hot? the temperature right now is around 25-28C)

3. I am using disposal liners (from ME) and the BF poops still go into the CD and stains remain. I have considered in using fleece liners but here is too hot and I am afraid my son wouldn't stand for it. Can anyone recommend some ways in preventing the stains (Given that I can’t sun dry the CDs)?

thanks!

Hi there!  Congratulations on your baby boy and on choosing cloth.

1--For most BF babies, the diapers really can just go straight into the pail.  (With my second son, I tried not rinsing out his BF poop, but it didn't work--he was one of those babies who went every week or so, so his poop was a bit more formed.  From reading this forum, though, it sounds like it works for most people.)
You should run a rinse or pre-wash on your machine before the main cycle, and because BF poo is so water-soluable, the poo rinses away.  Once your baby is on solids or if you use formula, then you need to remove as much poop as possible, and many people will rinse or spray off the diaper at that point, depending on how well the poop came off initially.  You ask, however, if the stains will be washed off, and the answer if often not.  The poop will be, but the stains often remain, and can be quite vividly-colored.  This doesn't mean the diapers aren't clean, so you have to decide how stain-tolerant you are.

2--I've seen studies that show that cloth diapers are actually cooler than disposables--the plastic in disposables absolutely doesn't breathe.  If you are concerned about the heat, though, you could try going coverless (or entirely diaperless--it's good for baby's skin) sometimes.  Baby obviously needs to be on a water-proof surface, but without the cover, the cotton should be very breathable.
Is it possible that the disposable liners you're using are irritating his skin?  Just guessing on that one; I haven't heard of anyone having problems with them.  Is his skin irritated at all?  Maybe your detergent has enzymes in it--some babies react to those?  Is there a chance that you are fastening the diaper or cover too tightly?  It's counter-intuitive, but they don't actually have to be very tight at all.  You should be able to easily slide a finger in between the elastic and skin, and often people can go looser if they want to.  Just trying to think of anything that might be causing the crying . . .

3.  I tried using disposable liners with BF poop, and found them pretty useless, since, as you note, poop still gets all over.  Fleece liners really do a better job of keeping poop off the diaper, but I understand your concerns about heat.  Sunning is fantastic; even if you can't dry outside, is there anyway to get sun to your diapers?  Even sunlight through a window can really make a difference.
That being said, stains are just a bit ugly, not unclean.  As baby gets older and goes less frequently, the stains will probably naturally lighten.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with the disposable liners at this point. Just put the diaper as is in the wetbag or pail and then just run a pre-rinse before washing. Really does work and is soooo much easier. Save the disposable liners for when the poop gets really nasty.

I also doubt that the diaper is making him feel overly hot. Cloth diapers breathe much more than disposables. It doesn't look like it because they're so thin and the cloth is so much thicker, but with disposables they're basically wrapped in a layer of plastic, whereas with cloth it's a layer of cotton and then a layer of PUL (which, although waterproof, is still more breathable than cotton). The crying is most likely coincidence...

Karen.

Congrats on cloth diapering!

I agree with KarenC and aavt that its probably not the cloth itself that's making your baby cry.

We also use a dry pail, but I use a diaper sprayer to spray the poop off into the toilet before dumping dirty ones in the pail.  That way, we don't have to run a pre-cycle rinse on the washing machine (ours is high-efficiency and doesn't have a pre-cycle rinse setting).  We bought our sprayer off jamtots.com and I believe they ship internationally.  The sprayers are a bit pricey ($30-$40 USD) but I've found it way worth it, especially as my daughter's poop gets messier as she ages (she's one now).

I had a hard time adjusting to diaper staining, too, but I'm with the other ladies now - it's going to happen so just try not to worry too much about it!  I agree that sunlight even through a window will help.  I also often spray some eco-friendly stain treatment on the poopy diapers, and that helps a lot, too.

Good luck!

Congratulations on your baby boy and CD'ing!

I also dry pail.  Love the convenience of just throwing the dirty diaper and wipe into the pail.  I wash my diapers every night - don't know if that would help reduce any staining.  From birth to six months, DS would cry when he had a wet diaper so then I would change him.  Now that he is 10 months, he doesn't cry when he is dirty though.  I don't use disposable liners.
