question Is Stay-Dry worthwhile? (sugaree)
Posted: 12:27:02 am on 11/9/2009 Modified: Never

Hi all! I just recently started using fitteds. Love my ME's that I picked up used. I'm thinking of purchasing more, and I was debating whether or not it was really worth the extra money to purchase my diapers with the stay-dry material. What are the Pros and Cons (if any) with the stay-dry?

hi there. i have some stay dry's for my son and they are excellent. the stay dry material just lets the urine through it and does not feel wet to the touch. it keeps the baby's skin dry so in my opinion is worth investing the extra money.

Hello,

I have stay-dry liners that I love to use, but although there are many people who use stay-dry diapers and love them, I think more people like to keep the stay-dry layer separate. From my understanding, the stay-dry diapers are harder to wash (more prone to build-up).

You can get much the same result by using a fleece liner (cheap to make yourself, just buy the cheapest fleece, cut to the desired shape, no need to sew as it doesn't unravel) or a stay-dry liner. That way, you can stop using the stay-dry liner for potty training (helping your little one feel the wetness) or if your child (or your next one) develops an allergy or a reaction to polyester. My son developed a persistent rash at about 9 months, and it stopped instantly when I stopped using the stay-dry liner. Might be a fluke, but I would have hated to have to buy a whole new stash of diapers.

That said, it appeals to a lot of people not to have to put together two different layers of fabric, and it works for many. I have also heard that stay-dry fabric is more stain-resistant, although in my case I find that my liners are more stained than my diapers.

Hope that helps!

I have the separate stay dry liners, and I use them at night time. My daughter is in the same diaper for about 11 hours, so I find she's a lot dryer in the morning with the liner in. She's not perfectly dry, but her skin isn't all sticky either. For me, the stay dry liners are more for me than her. I didn't like touching her sticky bum, but she couldn't care either way...

I don't have any stay dry diapers, but I have the dry absorbable liners. I am very glad that I chose these for my liners and like being able to put them on the boys at night. I also have the separate stay dry liners that aren't absorbant, but I don't like these as much. They can be difficult to keep flat and don't cover all of the larger size diapers. However, I like them much better than fleece.

Thanks guys. Seems like the liners might be the way to go so that I can get more use out of the diaper when I transition to PT'ing without the use of stay-dry material. I appreciate all the feedback. The same person who sold me my ME's recommended I check out this forum, and I am pleasantly surprised at all the useful info and support. I am concerned about leaking/comfort for the baby at night. I have been using pockets for night, but recently started getting wicking. It has been a frustrating battle. What do your night time diaper systems consist of?

I have OS ME bamboo diapers so I use that at night, at first with only a thin stay-dry liner, then as my boy grew I had to add an absorbent stay-dry liner, then another absorbent liner underneath. Then I started having leaks and my husband didn't think my son could put up with another liner, but someone on the forum suggested putting a liner folded in two on top of the diaper, at the front. It's held in place by the cover just fine. So that's my routine now: two liners in the diaper (one with the stay-dry liner) and a third liner on top.b In a very large cover. Of course, my boy is 2 now...

I'm selling 10 MEOS if you're interested. Never been used. Only washed them once when I got the shipment. I bought 30 of them and that was way more than I needed. I washed them with Soapnuts which leaves no residue. Let me know if you're interested. You can email me at moniquemitchell2007@yahoo.com. I'm selling them for $8/ea.

From smoke/pet free home.

I've generally used a L Sandys with absorbant liner and fleece liner next to skin at night, AF cover.  I've also used the OS with liner while travelling (I only take OS to keep it simple; have always used OS during the day) and that's worked great, too.  Heavier wetters will sometimes need an extra liner, but somehow even with my fairly heavily-wetting DS#1, just one liner at night has almost always been just dandy.  I used a fleece liner with every diaper until PTing, when I wanted the boys to feel the wet.  I'm still using the same liners I started with almost 5 years ago, and they've worked great.  I started leaving the fleece out of my DS#2's night diapers, as he day-dry and I'm hoping he might get a little more aware of when he feels wet at night.  He's dry more nights than not, but when he is wet he doesn't seem to have any real discomfort or redness without fleece or barrier cream.  I think that for most kids, the stay-dry elements of either the official stay-dry material or fleece are more for the parent than the child--makes us feel better.  They do also make poop easier to clean up and reduce staining, and if you line dry your diapers and feel bad they're crunchy, fleece is always soft next to the skin, so those are additional perks.

Weird... That is an actual reprint of my post, with an added link at the bottom that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the post. Viral advertisement?

See, I told you just buy the fleece at the fabric store and cut it up. It costs $3 compared to what...$10-$15 on each liner depending on which kind you buy. =) YOu can come over and we'll cut it up together. -Monique (mother of 3 boys)
