question New to CD...need advice! (willandnicole)
Posted: 9:39:50 am on 11/21/2009 Modified: Never

I will be having a baby in January and my husband and I are looking forward to using cloth diapers. I already bought 3 MEOS to try and a few g diapers to try as well. I'm thinking the MEOS will be too big to use when the baby is born and I already know the g diapers are going to be too big (got those off the recommendation of a good friend who had that problem). My current plan is to use disposables until about 2 months old...any other suggestions? Will the MEOS fit a newborn?? I've read that some people use the newborn sandy's but I'm trying not to invest in products that won't last very long. How much use will I get out of the newborn sandy's if I buy them, and how many should I buy if I do? Any insight is appreciated!!! TIA

I had 13 newborn Sandys and 24 OS diapers. I wanted to use CDs right away because I heard of many parents who get into a routine with disposables and never make the switch. My newborn Sandys lasted only 2 months though, and I slightly regretted buying them.

Right from the start we used the OS with our son, who was born at 7 pounds. I thought it looked ridiculously bulky at first (I had never seen CDs used on anyone) and I thought there is no way it could contain anything, but we never had a leak! Only thing is, we needed bigger outfits with the OS so the newborn diapers were handy for the cute newborn outfits. But you can certainly skip them if money is tight... I would certainly try the OS right away, and test them: you may think they look too big on your newborn, but they may still work just fine. Besides, everything always looks too big on a newborn!

Congratulations on you LO and good luck... Just 2 more months!

Using cloth with newborns is the easiest and best time to cloth diaper.  You will not only save lots of money and the environment, but it really isn't more difficult than disposibles as you won't have any blowouts or leaks.

Consider prefolds with snappi for the first few months... I loved them with my newborn!

All the best!
