  Sizing up in covers (Jacks1st)

So my daughter is FINALLY 20 pounds, and the legs on her medium airflow covers are too tight, so it's time to size up. I've read something before on this forum that some people go from the Medium to the large and never buy the m/l airflow covers. My daughter has been pretty true to size in most things. So reading the size on the larges at 27 pounds I think I'd better go to the m/l first. Agree? Or disagree?
Also, how many covers do you have at that size/13 months old? When she was in the xsmall and small covers I only had 4, and washed them in the sink between wearings, but with the mediums, handwashing didn't get out the pee smell, so I bought 8 so I'd have enough to go from laundry day to laundry day. I find I've been washing them with the diapers though. So I'm thinking of only getting six. Any thoughts on that one? Did any one else find that as their baby got older the pee smell on the covers got really strong after one day?

First, with the cover sizing, I did use the M/L, but I think that when I was buying them they were actually listed with overlapping weights, like 20-35 lbs for the L and 20-27 for the M/L.  It's possible that was at the UK site I was reading about them on, rather than ME's list, but I mention it because it does seem pretty accurate.  I liked having the M/L for my first, a chunk who hit 20 lbs before 6 months.  Although the L worked fine, the M/L fit him a bit better.  For my second, who didn't hit 20 lbs until a year, I used the L and M/L nearly interchangably at first and finally just sold off my M/L before he outgrew them (around 23 lbs or so?) because I just didn't see the need for them in my stash.
All of that to say:  The L will likely work for you, if you can live with a little extra poufiness (which smashes under clothes and doesn't make nearly as much difference as when they're so tiny).  If you were to buy L and decide that you really wanted some M/L, you could always go back and buy the M/L because unless your DD is very small, doesn't end up needing extra boosting at night, and PTs early, you will almost definitely need the L.  You'd be out shipping in that scenario, but it might be worth the potential cost savings if you can skip the M/L.

With the covers numbers and smell question, I had 6 for all sizes, but if I were to do it again, I'd have only 4 in the smaller sizes because, as you say, hand-washing works great.  I did find that hand-washing just didn't cut it as my boys got older (drinking less and eating a more varied diet) and the covers really did need a trip through the wash.  I ended up buying more L for a total of 8 because by that point I wasn't doing the wash often enough to always have a clean cover.  8 just gave me that wiggle room and worked well for both of my boys; they were in the L for about a year and half each (#1 because he was big, #2 because he's been slower to go night dry).  If you plan on continuing to wash the covers with the diapers, then I'd think 6 would be plenty, as you have to do diapers more often than regular wash.  It's possible, though, that washing them all the time in hot water could shorten their lives; I've always treated my covers very conservatively so can't really be sure about that--maybe there's someone out there who's washed covers with diapers for years and had great success?

My son was in large covers for ages...probably 18 months.  I only had four and washed them with my regular laundry in warm or cold water.  They are still absorbant and work like they should, but they are totally discoloured on the inside and smelly after a few hours of wear.  I even tried stripping them and used a tiny bit of bleach once or twice.  Looking back, I should have bought four more.  I will use them for my daughter, but I also havve three Rikkis for 20-35 pounds, so I have seven covers at a time.  She's currently in the M/L.  The more the better for me, so I don't have to handwash, search for one, or do laundry frequently if I don't need/want to.

I could have skipped the M/L size.  I did skip the S and went straight to M save money.  The fit is bulky but it still doesn't the job.  DD grew out of the M/L long before the maximum weight limit. Based of the weight recommendation I thought she'd be potty trained before she needed Larges but here she is wearing Ls at 19 months since she was constantly leaking with the M/L.

I have 4 covers and its just enough since I always have a spare at day care.  So usually one on her, one in day care, one in the wash and one clean.  I pretty much have to do a regular load of laundry every night to make sure that there is always a clean, dry cover.
