My sister is expecting and is going to use cloth. She has seen the MEOS in use on my children, and really dislikes their big bums. REALLY dislikes. She does, however, want my opinion on which diapers to buy. I don't want to get too detailed, and want to stick to mainstream diapers available in stores though she'll probably order online. (Sorry to any moms out there who make and sell diapers). I'll loan her my 7 XS Sandy's, but they won't get her very far! Because of the bulkiness, she probably won't want any MEOS, though she may consider a OS pocket diaper.
Here's what I'm thinking of recommending to get her started: 6 XS prefolds (rare, but available at Parenting By Nature - heck, I'd buy them for our baby #3 in a few years and let her try them - they're cheap!); 6 small Fuzzi Bunz; 6 small Sandys - coloured for the fun factor or bamboo for less bulk?
She can test these out and then decide what kind to get as her baby gets bigger.
Thanks for your input! |

ME Sandy's are great diapers but they are definitely NOT trim fitting are they? As a general observation, it seems to me that AIOs are potentially the trimmest option, especially if she is willing to use synthetic materials. I've never tried the ME AIO, so hopefully somebody else here can tell you about them.
As far as pockets go, fitted styles are going to be much more trim than OS styles, because they don't have all the extra fabric to grow into. I really like fuzzi bunz. Also, www.jilliansdrawers.com has a great trial package and excellent customer service. |

Personally I found that the Sandy's were fairly trim but then everyone's perception is different. The One-Size are actually trimmer on larger babies (when not folded down) because they have less fabric.
I have used AIOs and I don't think they're the trimmest option by any means. The absolute trimmest option would be pocket diapers with a super absorbent insert (bamboo or hemp). Surprisingly enough, prefolds in certain sizes (and perhaps in super absorbent fabrics like I mentioned) could actually rival it as well. The thing with prefolds is that they can be trimmer if you don't have to fold the front down. You can use shaped diapers as well (they're almost like a prefold except hourglass shaped and no folding necessary). The advantage to all of these is that they don't have absorbent fabric on the hips (only in the middle), which makes them trimmer.
A couple things your sister should keep in mind... First, what is trimmest and best fitting on one child may not be on another child. Every diaper fits every child differently. Second, although pockets are the trimmest and most convenient option, they're also the most expensive and most difficult to keep clean (the fleece in the pocket can hold onto odors and are vulnerable to build-up causing repelling). Thrid, generally speaking, the trimmer the diaper, the less is absorbs. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean you'll have to change more often. You just can't have a super-mega absorbing diaper that's super trim as well (not in cloth anyway).
I would advise her to find a cloth diaper store that offers trials. She can try a variety of diapers for a week or two and then return them. It costs the same thing as disposables for the week (or two) and usually the cost can be applied to a store purchase. You can also look at places like Diaperswappers for used diapers of all sorts.

I've heard some really good things about the new Bumgenius Flip diapers. I haven't tried them myself but oh so tempted. They're sort of like a g-diaper with a waterproof cover and then you lay in the absorbent liner. When it's time to change you literally "flip" the absorbent layer into the diaper pail and put a fresh one in the cover and reuse it unless it's soiled. They seem pretty economical too because they're a OS cover (with snaps so they should last longer than velcro) so you just need a few covers and a bunch of inserts. They also have disposable inserts for travelling.
Can you tell I really want them? Trying very hard to be good, at least until after Christmas. |

Flip diapers huh? People have been doing the same thing with prefolds, shaped diapers or pocket inserts for ages now. Although the one-size cover is a fairly new thing, haven't been many of them around yet (that I know of at least - admitedly I haven't shopped around much lately - no one to shop for!). Have to say I really like the idea of a one-size cover. Shouldn't be that much bulkier than sized covers and could make quite a difference in someone's diaper budget! Not to mention that it's that much fewer resources used!

I really find the MEOS to be quite trim, when compared to Sandys. I use ours for that purpose, actually. If she got them in bamboo, they'd be fantastic for absorbency, while being trim still. I've used the AIO, and they sure are nice but I don't find them THAT much trimmer than the MEOS, fwiw, and they are much more expensive. I've tried various brands, and really...cloth diapers are just a bit bulkier Wait till she tries a newborn with a disposable...NOT TRIM. Laugh..
