question My new-to-me Bamboo Sandys don't feel soft? (sokalskijj)
Posted: 8:18:29 pm on 12/9/2009 Modified: Never

I just received some small bamboo Sandy's 2nd hand. The mama had only used them for a few months, so they haven't seen heavy use, I wouldn't think. Anyway, when I got them, they feel quite rough (they feel exactly like my cotton sandys) in comparison to the one brand new bamboo sandys I have.
I have a dozen new MEOS in bamboo, and they are SOOOO soft, so I really notice the difference.
Is this normal, or did she 'do' something to them to make them less soft, that I could remedy? I've stripped them (of course), and I did notice there was build up, but I wouldn't think that would substantially diminish softness??

I should add that they don't feel horrible, or anything(I say rough, but it's in comparison to the new bamboo). They feel no different than my cotton sandys (and I still love them!), but just not that squishy softness of my brand new sandys, or the MEOS (those are new too, though..maybe it's just a new vs old thing?)

Well, I do find that my bamboo diapers are definitely not as soft as when I first got them. When I have bought new diapers, I couldn't believe how soft and fluffy they were compared to my old ones. That said, people on this forum have said that used bamboo are still softer than old cotton (I can't tell, I have only bamboo) so maybe there is something wrong with yours? Have you tried putting vinegar in the wash - I heard it helps dissolve built-up minerals and acts as a natural "fabric softener". Other than that, I really don't know...

Thanks for the reply
I have tried vinegar when I stripped them. I'm not feeling them significantly softer than the cotton, but I was just looking at the bamboo liners I bought a year ago, and you know, they are not as soft, either, as the brand new bamboo. Maybe it is just a new vs. old? My old bamboo liners are also not quite as floppy as the brand new ones are?
I know how I washed my own liners (only ever in soap nuts), so I really don't think she 'did' anything significant to them?
Just a curiosity thing, though
