i have no idea what to think on this one. a few of his diapers have a seriously strong amonia smell to them. i mean so strong, it burns my nose and lungs and makes me have an asthma attack. and it is in both daytime and night time diapers that this happens. does this mean that all of his diapers need to be stripped? most of his diapers do not have this problem. it has only been the bamboos in which this happens. we temporarily went to the scented version of arm & hammer detergent simply due to the fact that the store did not carry our usual free and clear version of it. and for those of u who know that i have used the all f&c in the past, yes, i did, but switched to arm & hammer's version. in my opinion, it cleans dipes better.
ETA i washed my dipes a few days ago and when i changed my son this morning, the strong amonia smell was present again. but it was only in 1 bamboo dipe vs 3 before that wash. also, i ran the priliminary wash with no detergent and did not notice any lingering bubbles that would indicate that a stripping is due. so what can be causing this problemt? please help! |

| we are going to visit family today and tomorrow and i do not want this amonia smell to be present simply due to the fact that people might say that i am not changing my son often enough, or keeping him clean enough. we will be leaving today midafternoon and i am hoping to hear from some of you reguarding this issue before we leave because i am not taking my laptop with me. |

You know, I've been trying to think of anything to suggest and other than stripping I can't really think of anything else. Start with a good vinegar soak (4-5 cups minimum, more if you'd like, just chug it in there!) and then follow up with lots and lots of hot hot water.
I can't remember if you have a front or top loader but if you have an HE front loader, maybe this would be an opportunity to strip in a top loader if that's what your relatives have.
Other than stripping and watching how much detergent you use, I really don't know what to say. I'm guessing that this came on suddenly? That and the fact that it's in daytime and nighttime diapers is rather odd and confusing. Usually build-up would have to be really really bad for daytime diapers to smell that strong, but normally I'd expect this to have come on gradually and nighttime diapers would have come first much before daytime ones. I wouldn't expect a simple change from unscented to scented could trigger such severe problems, it's not really the dyes or perfumes that cause odors in diapers. It can cause issues for those with sensitive skin but I wouldn't expect just perfume alone to cause build-up, and certainly not that quickly. Even odder is that it's only certain diapers, I'd expect all of them to be pretty much the same...
Sorry, don't suppose telling you why this is so odd to me is particularly helpful to you. I'd say try the stripping, watch the amount of detergent and try to get your hands on the free & clear detergent you were using before since it seems that one was working for you.

| yes that was extremely strange to me as well. because if it was strictly an issue that stripping could fix, all dipes would be effected, not just a few. hmmm... perhaps it was just the concentration of my son's urine on those particular days... although i have no idea why the urine would have that god aweful strong amonia smell, especially when i am changing him once he gets wet, not letting him sit in a wet diaper for the smell to build. by the way... just to let everyone know, i referred my cousin to try ME diapers instead of disposables. i gave her all the posatives of them so she is going to check them out and hopefully she will start building a stash. man i will be so disappointed next christmas if she shows up with her baby, who by that time will be 6 months old, in a disposable. |

| I find that it's time to run the sanitary cycle on my dipes when they start to smell really strong like ammonia. I run the sanitary cycle on all the dipes about 2x a month. I have all bamboo dipes. If it's just a couple, I'm not sure what's going on... |

| hehe I try not to be judgemental but ever since I went cloth, I think disposables are so inferior... I can feel your disappointment. I recommended my ME diapers to my brother and sister-in-law but not sure what they are planning to do. |

Yeah, I know the disappointment feeling. I have a friend that I'd turned to cloth and she loved it. Did it for the whole year of her maternity leave and then her little one went to daycare. She'd even discussed it with the people there and they'd said that they'd try it. Then when she showed up the first day they said there had been a misunderstanding and that they couldn't do it. She's on the board of the daycare and said she'd try to get them to change their policy and in the meantime used cloth nights and weekends. I'm assuming that worked out but now her second just entered the daycare. I had a small bunch of old diapers that I offered her at a party last weekend and she said that she couldn't use them because now that her second was in daycare that they'd gone to disposables. I didn't get a chance to ask why she'd stopped for nights and weekends. I'd think that with two in diapers it would be worth it for at least weekends but then I'm not in her shoes. It's too bad, she'd been very enthusiastic about cloth before, just love it. Personally I blame the daycare and find it quite frustrating that because of a narrow-minded policy a mom with two in diapers has given up cloth!
Anyway, all that to say that I have a small bunch of diapers (cotton Toddle-Ease), covers (XL Airflows), pocket inserts (can be used as liners for nighttime) and fleece liners up for grabs. They're not in great condition, the diapers are starting to have small worn spots and are definetly thinning (been through 3 of my kids and a couple of nieces as well) and the covers are very yellowed/faded. But they all work (I was using them up until the twins started outgrowing them and preferred something easier to pull up/down) and would be good for someone who needs a few extra diapers to get them through potty training or as spares for a small stash. I don't want anything for them, except maybe a little to cover postage if it adds up to a lot. I know that Firedancer mentioned needing a few extras so I though I'd mention it here first, if not I'll post them on the buy/sell forum.

yes that is extremely sad that day cares are afraid of cloth. i mean come on! even my pediatrician and husband can do them up correctly even though my husband has it in his head to put the cover on the tightest setting around the leg. omg! talk about major leak this morning! the whole dipe was over saturated and was leaking around the legs and waist. the whole inside of the cover was soaked as well but i just chalk it up to the fact that he had tons of liquids yesterday and i should probably use a liner on those nights. yes if u did not post on the buy and sell forum, i would love to take that stash off of your hands. please let me know. thanks. how much r u asking for shipping? also, will he be able to use toddle ease? he is nearly 20 lbs at 10 months old. but i suppose for emergency dipes when i have his in the wash, it will not hurt him to use them for a couple hours. we r possibly planning on a new lo to accompany our son in a few months or so. how will i get new diapers? that is one of the concerns that i brought up to my husband last night. also i am not sure if i should stick with ME, or try another brand. I am used to ME and am not sure if i would like any others because i am so familiar with these ones. does the diaper swappers site give away dipes? wouldn't ask, but we cannot buy a stash at once because we r on a fixed income.
i also tried an OS on a doll that my mom had bought me when i was pregnant to practice on and that ddipe was sooooo big on it! but then again, so was the posie that came with it lol. lol the ones that come with those dolls feel like nothing more than plastic bags with sticky tab tapes and stuffing on the inside. |

Ok, great, just email me at sylvain_karen @ hotmail.com (remove spaces - just did that to avoid spam). I'll see how much shipping would be, I'll cover it as long as it's not too much...
For emergencies I think the Toddle-Ease should work. Obviously it'll be too big but the cover should keep it up anyway... You could always try to save it for a nighttime diaper if you see you're starting to run low. My last three were tall/skinny and could wear them as early as 12-18 months at night (the liner helps fill it in) with no problems. You could always try playing with folding it or something. Either way he'll grow into it soon enough I'm sure!
For a new little one you won't necessarily need more diapers, you'd really be surprised how well the One-Size work. They'll be bulky at first but they'll work and you'll soon get used to the bulk. You can also always ask for some x-small or small Sandy's as baby gifts if people ask what you need.
I know Diaper Swappers has a 'free for shipping' section, you could always check that out. I have no idea how much they have there or what kind of condition it's in but it's worth a look.

Urine Residue. Do you have a front or top loader? Set your water heater a bit higher and wash few diapers with less soap. ALSO, add a sopping wet towel to your wash load to trick the washer into using more water if a front-loader. To get rid of this smell now - use Nature Clean POWDER soap, Nellie's something cloth-diaper approved and use 6 spoons rather than one spoonful. Do many, many full wash cycles withOUT soap after that to gwet rid of the residue and PLEASE do not use Dawn dish detergent in your washing machine. You don't need to if you turn the temp up and do more than 5 hot water washes to strip the urine bacteria off your diapers. |
