question newborn diapering (embee)
Posted: 9:54:25 am on 1/15/2010 Modified: Never

Hi, this is my first post, and I am very new to cloth diapering! We're currently expecting our first baby in April.

I got a stash of gently used Mother-ease diapers for cheap (woohoo!) and am wondering how they are for a newborn? Is it possible to use immediately, or do I need to wait until the umbilical cord falls off? Any special things I should know?

They are mostly the one-size and I am hoping that they fit. I'm expecting baby to be on the larger side, so hopefully!

Thanks so much! Reading all your posts has been a great education already!!

Most people can use their cloth right from the beginning with no worries. You'll probably find that the diaper looks really big and bulky, especially if you're used to the look of disposables. But in terms of function they work just fine even if they look ridiculously big/bulky.

For the stump, perhaps just tucking or folding the diaper and/or cover under the stump. Often if you change the diaper often enough you'll find that the stump area doesn't even get really wet anyway (newborns poop so much that you're often changing diapers that are just barely wet anyway). From what I've seen it really depends on the baby. My babies' stumps usually dried up and fell off very quickly (less than a week). For others it takes longer so the diaper is a bit more of an issue.

Welcome to the board and congrats on your pregnancy!

Karen.

I used both the S Sandys and OS from 6.5 lbs with my DS#2 (8 lbs with DS#1), and both worked very well (wasn't sure how they'd work at those low weights, but was sick of pee leaks with disposables).  I actually found that the diapers looked bulkier on my chunky #1 than on my skinny #2, strange but true.
I had planned on phasing into cloth, assuming it was going to be more work, have more leaks, etc., but it's been great from the beginning.  I had already started to get some blow-out leaks with disposables, and ME diapers were the best for keeping the poop in the diaper instead of all over everything.
I also found that once we switched to cloth (it was about 2 wks with my first), my husband was more comfortable handling him, as the diaper gave baby a bit more of a solid feeling.  And since cloth diapering is what my husband learned, he was very comfortable doing it (but didn't feel confident changing disposables).

Thanks for the advice! I did discover there are also some Sandys in my stash, but I think they are all large... good for later!!

I'm glad that the OS should work for a newborn. Saves me getting something else for the first month or so!

People who get something else for the first month or two (like the newborn/XS Sandys) are generally doing so because of bulk.  The OS can appear fairly bulky when it is folded-over for a newborn.  This has nothing to do with function, so if you are okay with the bulk, no need to do anything else (besides make sure you have some S covers, that is!).

You may want to consider a disposable liner for the first few poops.  The meconium was hard to get out.  If you're not worried about it though, go for it.

A paper towel can make a good liner for the first few days.
