  New mom soon-help! (S. Chamberlin)

Hi! Like the other new post this morning, we are expecting in April!  I am nervous about buying all 24 of one kind of the diapers because we do not yet know whether our baby will be a super runny shooter pooper or what.  Do you think I should get half OS and half of the Sandys? Also, they say on the website to get 4 covers as your baby grows.  Does this mean you only need one at a time until they grow? So, you don't wash the cover as often I gather, but do I need a few in the same size? Also, are 24 diapers really enough or should I buy more?  This is funny that I am all excited to purchase diapers. I just want to purchase intelligently!

Also, love reading all of the different topics on here (front load washer etc.). Good information and things to think about. Thank you everyone.

I have a 13 month old daughter and have used ME Sandy's and the OS since she was born. She was 3 weeks early and tiny (6.5 lbs) so I used the newborn Sandy's.  Here are my thoughts:

- I prefer the Sandy's over the OS as they are less bulky and actually absorb more
- Don't worry about type of poop - I've seen it all and have never had a blow-out with any of the types of ME (unlike disposables!)
- the number of diapers you have will dictate when you wash.  Initially, you will probably change 10 - 14 times a day (depending on whether you use a disposable at night).  By 6 months, that will in all likelihood decrease to 6 - 8 times a day.  I had in excess of 36 diapers and by 6 months, needed to wash before I ran out of diapers (every 3-4 days for sanitary reasons).  So 24 in the beginning will seem insufficient but by 6 months will probably be perfect for a wash every 3 days.
- the OS is a great system because it will literally take you from birth to potty training (in all likelihood) but have slightly less absorbency
- if money isn't an issue, I'd go the Sandy's route (but it means 2 purchases of 24 diapers each which gets expensive unless you can find them used)
- for covers.  You'll need 3-4 of each size so expect to buy them as your baby grows

As an aside, I am considering buying the Large Sandy's in which case I'll have a wack of Bamboo Sandy's small and OS (I'll need to count) plus OS liners to sell second hand.  Let me know if you'd be interested in any / all and if I go the Sandy's large route, I can get in touch with you with a price.

Good luck....you won't regret using cloth....

Hey!  Thank you so much for all of the information!  Perfect.  Yes, please do let me know if you move on up to the Sandys Large.  We are due around April 13th so there is time before I need to purchase. I don't know whether I should post my email on here for you or is that a no no?!

Thanks again!

Re. your original post, I really wouldn't worry too much about the "runny poop" thing.  That's been discussed a bit recently with the OS vs. the L Sandys, but for most people it's not a problem.  Do note, though, that when it is a problem it isn't for newborns, it's generally if you have a certain type of toddler (when the OS is in the folded-up position and the alternative is the L Sandys).  So although I guess if you knew for sure that you were going to have a skinny, active, runny-pooping toddler, that should affect your decision, but otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.
I used both the OS and S Sandys from 6.5 lbs, and they both worked great.  Both diapers kept in the amazingly explosive BF poops that my firstborn produced every feed for 6 months.  I actually did start having trouble with the S Sandys leaking up the back a few times (onto the cover, mind you, not outside of it) as DS got around 18 lbs at 4.5 months; I think his build just taxed them too much, as I never had that problem with my second son, who was able to wear the S Sandys for nearly a year.
I have mostly OS (19 OS, 6/7 Sandys in L and S) and have enjoyed having both kinds of diapers.  With DS#1, at first I kind of wished I'd gone with Sandys, as the OS can be a bit bulkier on a newborn.  When he outgrew the S Sandys before 5 months, though, I was very glad that I hadn't made them more of my stash!  When I had two in diapers, I REALLY liked that I could use the OS on both boys; less work to keep straight how many clean diapers in which size.

I guess I had 26 diapers for a single child(misunderstood the "buy 12 get 1 free deal") and that's a great number.  I washed every 2 days at the beginning and every 3.5 days toward the end.  I did line dry primarily.

Just to clarify a comment by previous poster; the S Sandys is trimmer than the OS, but does *not* absorb as much (10 oz XS/newborn size, 12 oz S, vs 13 oz OS).  The L Sandies is bulkier but absorbs more (15 oz).  The difference in absorbtion isn't likely to be relevant in the early days, but just for the record.

Think PP answered the covers question.  Many people have between 4 and 6 covers in each size.  How we treat covers varies.  Most people use one cover all day (unless it gets poop on it), and put it into the wash at the end of the day (or first thing in the morning).  Others change covers a few times a day, but just rinse off the covers between uses.  Newborns have pretty mild pee and the poo washes right off with soap and water, so at first you can probably just rinse or handwash your covers (they dry quickly, just toss the over the shower rod).  As babies get toward toddler time, the pee can get stinkier, and I found that handwashing wasn't cutting it anymore.  Because I was putting the covers into the regular wash, I got more in size L, because that way I didn't have pressure to do wash just for clean covers, etc.  If I had to pick numbers to do it again, I'd probably go with 4 S, 4 M, and 8 L, but that's me.  ME will mix sizes on their cover special, so if you order 4 S and decide you need more, you could always get 2 S and 2 M, using the deal (think you have to call for that?).

Thank you very much!  I feel a better sense of the whole thing now, for sure.  I emailed my best friend who lives far away and has a 6 year old and mentioned that I was looking online at cloth diapers.  I was hesitant to mention it because people have such strong opinions about pregnancy and babies and you don't want them to shoot you down, especially when you actually care about their opinion.  Here is how she responded:

"Oh lord, don't get me started on cloth diapers!!  They were my obsession for the last 3 months of my pregnancy, and for the first year of Danielle's life.  I swear to you, all I did at HP the last trimester was use the internet to research different cloth diapers.  I LOVED LOVED LOVED them.  They are not for everyone, but I strongly recommend trying them just in case you can get into it.   I loved buying them, putting them on her butt, washing them... I loved the whole damn she-bang.  It's probably the number one reason my sister thought I was a crazy parent.  I just got rid of all the baby stuff - I think I told you, but I didn't get rid of my cloth diapers.  I love them too much, even if they will never be used again. PLUS, on average, babies who wear cloth, get potty trained a WHOLE YEAR ahead of the average, because they can ACUALLY FEEL pee against thier body, which is - get this - UNPLEASANT. Unlike babies who wear those super duper high-tech jobbers that are dry to the touch even after you've pissed a gallon into them.  And then you're just mystified as to why they've been alive 4 years and still can't seem to make the connection between pissing and being wet.  Whatever you use is totally fine.  I'm just saying."

I thought it was funny! Thanks again for all of your advice!
