I know this is OT, but figure this may be a good population for recommendations on this subject. I've been wanting to get away from aluminum in deodorants, but have found options very limited in mainstream brands. There's more in men's deodorants, so I used an Old Spice type for a while, but realized my clothes were getting stains. As staining has never been a problem in the past, I suspect it's at least partially a function of the gel-ish deodorant (as opposed to the chalkier-type). I've tried a few "natural" deodorants but haven't been pleased with the results. And I'm not a really sweaty person, either. My brother and SIL just quit using the stuff altogether, but they shower daily, and my skin just can't take more than every other day. Anyone used anything they think is great? |

Timely subject for me as well since I'm on the same path you are. For wintertime I can mostly get by with nothing at all, I started this last winter and so far so good. Spring, summer and fall are another story though. I'm not a particularly sweaty person either but I just don't know if I'm willing to put up with stinkyness. A friend hasn't used anti-perspirant in years and she uses something else instead (I should ask her about it) but I don't think it's all that effective because it's happened on several occasions that being too close to her was unpleasant. I just don't think I could go there even if was only just occasionally that it got that bad.
I just bought one of those crystal type deodorants and we'll see how that goes but since I'm doing ok with nothing right now I suspect I won't be really testing it till spring at least. My hope is that this will get me through spring and fall, leaving only summer when I feel the need for anti-perspirant. Not perfect but I figure it's better than nothing...
If you don't want to shower all the time, you could always just give your armpits a quick wipe down with soap & water once or twice a day. I may try that myself and see how much it helps...
Looking forward to other responses...

| I'm using Tom's of Maine right now... it is ok, but not great. I just found Arm & Hammer Essentials at the grocery store. I had no idea they had come out with a deodorant in their Essentials line! I bought three because they were on sale, lol. Trying to use up the Tom's before I try out the A&H, so I can't say how well it works yet. But it's another option! |
| Hadn't seen the A&H anywhere, but just looked on Amazon and it gets mostly good reviews. I may keep an eye out for that one. Some reviews were concerned that it contains an antimicrobial, which is something I haven't really looked into and don't know if mainstream deodorants have or not. |

| Hi. I just started using Dessert Essence with Tea tree oil. So far, it works really well and isn't as expensive. I have tried Jason's and Tom's of Maine, but during summer and anxious moments, they don't keep odor at away. My daughter used Dessert Essence with cammomile and calendula and it did not work for her. |

| I really like Jason's deodorant the Tea Tree Oil one is great. Smells wonderful and works great. I've tried Toms and it is okay as well, but I prefer Jason's TTO. |

I gave the A&H a try and it works GREAT. I didn't realize it had triclosan in it, because it's not even listed as an active ingredient. There is so little that it's just way down at the bottom of the list.
Adidas used to make an aluminum-free antiperspirant that worked well, but I haven't been able to find it for a couple of years. |
| I was also reading about the Adidas one on Amazon. There are sellers on there selling it for ridiculous amounts, but also some more recent comments from people saying that after searching high and low they ending up finding it at Walgreens. |

When I was living in the states I used the crystal one for years and had no problems. Now that I live in Malaysia (a tropical country) there is NO way I can do that, I sweat even through mainstream deodorants, but for a cooler climate the crystal one works well. I used to even use it in the summer. I would be sweaty sometimes, but not stinky. My parents both use it, it's the only one they use, and they've never been smelly either, even in summer. I'll probably go back to using the crystal one when I move back to the states. I know Aubrey Organics makes a deodorant. I haven't tried it, but I use a lot of their other products that are great. |

Well, I found the Adidas Cotton Tech aluminum-free deoderant at Walgreens, so will give that a try. They didn't have the A&H, so I will keep an eye out for that elsewhere. Can you tell me if the A&H is really gel-y? They had one A&H kind at the store (not labelled Essentials, though), that didn't have aluminum, but it looked really sticky, like the kind that I think stained my clothes. |

| It looks gel-y when you push it up out of the tube, but I think it is just clear. It does not feel like gel at all when it's on, and I haven't noticed any staining. HTH! |

I found this recipe for making your own deodorant. I have no idea if it works but I am going to try it ... http://vegetarianonthecheap.blogspot.com/2009/02/insane-and-unheard-of-ideas-to-save.html
also a recipe for your own toothpaste |

Have you tried this yet, OLY?
I've been trying the Adidas Cotton Tech and the Arm and Hammer Essentials. Both are resonably good (given the time of year; have to see about summer), although I think that the Adidas seems a little more proactive, almost a bit absorbant. I really don't like feeling sticky pits, and it's a bit better with Adidas than the Arm and Hammer, but the A&H kind of plays catch-up and deals with smell, too. (Yes, because I'm paying hyper attention to this, when I know I've been sweating, I've been sniffing to check how good of a job the deodorants are doing! I don't think anyone else is catching a whiff of anything at all . . .) Just a swab with soap and water in the morning really does seem to help when I'm not wearing anything. As I've looked into this, I've found that many of the non-aluminum deodorants do contain things like triclosan, an antibacterial. Some of the ones that are more "natural" will claim to use lichen or TTO or something else for that kind of effect. Apparently there's a bit of disagreement on what deodordants are environmentally-friendly and least health-harmful, right now I'm focussing on avoiding the alumninum. |

I've recently read that some people sprinkle baking soda on their armpits in the morning as a solution. I haven't tried this yet as I'm still doing fine with nothing. I'll let you all know how the crystal thingie works as I anticipate that with the warmer weather (yeah!!) coming I'll be needing something soon.

| I've heard this, too, but wonder about the logistics of applying a powder in a gravity-defying way. What's the technique, kind of grab a sprinkle between your fingers and rub in or something? |

| So frustrating - I am trying to track down the Adidas deodorant. I can not find it anywhere near me, I looked on Amazon and it is like $20 each. Ugh! |
| Yes, they're definitely gouging on Amazon, as the Adidas stuff seems to have a cult following or something! I did end up finding it at Walgreens for around $5. The A&H Essentials stuff is cheaper, and I found it at the grocery store (Kroger chain), rather than anywhere like Walgreens, Walmart, Target, or the natural foods store. We have something like five Walgreens in town, and only one of them had it, so if you have Walgreens near you, it might be worth calling around. They do carry another Adidas one, an anti-perspirant, so you have to look carefully, and if calling, specify Cotton Tech. |

I just started using Melaleuca's Body Satin deodorant and love it. No staining, goes on clear and really works. We've used their wellness products for 10 years and love them all!
Check it out at http://www.melaleuca.com/ps.
Good luck!

| I found the Adidas Cotton Tech absorbent-deo at my local Zellers (Ontario) for $2.99. It doesn't say "aluminum free" or anything on it, but also doesn't talk about any aluminum content. I was just curious if this is the "right" one...the one you were writing about. I guess it seems odd to me that they wouldn't use the "aluminum free" as a marketing advantage, seeing as I haven't been able to find any other sort of "regular" women's deo without aluminum (so far...). |

| i have used the crystals in the past and loved them. the only problem is that my cat kept on knocking them off of the counter and breaking them. now that i do not have a cat, i figured i would try again. i bought a crystal stick off of greenvirginproducts.com and it works excellent! i tried toms of maine as well and found that it really did not work for me after i started to perspire and i am not a very sweaty person either. |
