My son is only 2 1/2, and about 35 pounds, tall and slim. He has recently decided that he wanted to wear underwear, and has been pretty much potty trained since - only 3 accidents in 10 days, even when going out - but I cannot reasonably expect him to be dry at night for a good while. We currently own only Bamboo OS, and at night I need to use 3 liners in his diaper, and I have XL covers to fit over all that bulk.
Now my son woke up with a leak twice in the last three days. I could put more thought into trying to find the cause of the leak - my husband says his diaper wasn't saturated this morning despite the leak - but I am considering instead buying a different kind of diaper for nighttime. My son is very independent and insists on putting his pants and his underwear on, and pulling them off, himself. I know that he would like to have a diaper that he could deal with by himself and that would feel more like underwear, and I wouldn't be surprised if that would help him eventually learn to use the potty at night if he needed to. But I'm not sure which solution would be the best.
Obviously, Toddle-Ease diapers would be cheaper, especially since I already have XL covers, and they exist in bamboo, which I like. They would certainly fit for a while, and I know that this style is easier than OS to pull on and off if need be. But it would still be harder for my son to do, especially with the separate cover, than the Bedwetter pants. But since he is at the lower limit for weight and is rather slim, I would like some feedback about the Bedwetter sizing. I know that they are very bulky, but how would they compare to a OS with 3 liners inside? They also take a while to dry, I know, but I think I can live with that. And they would be much more absorbent. So I'm leaning towards the Bedwetter, but is there any pros and cons I haven't thought of?
I am in a position where I would be able to afford either, especially since I am having another child so might reuse them, or could resell them if they are not used much. Any insight would be very appreciated! |

I had similar-sounding night leaks when my older son was day dry and on his way to being night dry. Although I added extra liners to his L Sandys after the first leak, thinking he didn't have enough absorbancy, it didn't seem to make much of a difference. He didn't have tons of these, a handful, but they were odd and only during that period shortly before he became night dry (maybe two months between day dry and night dry). I finally decided he was leaking because he was holding it until whoosh! out it came and overwhelmed the diaper. He would do that with disposables sometimes when he was younger, but not cloth. They were only side leaks, so I think when the planets aligned for him to be sleeping on his side when this occured, there was just too much rushing too quickly and some made it out the diaper. I was thinking about this again this morning, as my 3-year-old (DS#2), who is about 75% night dry, had a side leak. Half the diaper was dry (almost like a clear line running vertically from belly-button down and up to the back), so I'm not sure it could be about overall absorbancy. Neither of my boys has ever wanted to do any pulling-up/down on their own, so that may affect this comment, but if I were in your shoes, I'd probably go with the TE. You're right that you can't predict when DS will be night-dry. With my first it was within months; with my second it's closing in on a year with no sign of reliability (fortunately for me on that front, he's small, so L Sandys are still plenty big). If you get the TE, you could use them with your next child to complement your OS stash, either at night or even during the day depending on size, and get likely get more use from them, since you could use them at a lower weight than the Bedwetter pants. I would think, too, that the TE would have a broader resale market, since once you get into the larger sizes you have a more limited target audience. Like I said, though, even my 5-year-old would still be thrilled if I dressed him every morning . . . |

| Very interesting thought about the leak... I think you're dead on! It was definitely a side leak, both times, and although the sheet underneath him was quite wet, the cover was completely dry. And the day in between, where he had no leak, the diaper was almost dry. Makes me wonder if he held his pee all night, but then peed when he woke up. The first thing he usually asks for when he wakes up is the potty, so it would make sense that when if he wakes up more slowly he pees in his diaper suddenly and it overwhelms it... |

I think the first thing I'd do is take his measurements and contact ME to see if the bedwetter pants would be a good fit. If the fit wouldn't be right then that might solve your dilema for you.
I don't know that I can be much help. I'm now using the bedwetter pants on my girls, after using the Toddle-Ease for night for a while. They still fit in the Toddle-Ease but wanted the freedom of being able to remove the diaper by themselves so we switched over earlier than we had with my son (with him we waited till he totally outgrew the Toddle-Ease, and being very thin that took a while). They were also not showing any signs at all of being night dry (even now at 4 and a half they wet almost every night, family history with their dad and older siblings also indicates it might take a while) so I figured it was worth the investment.
I have to say that I do love the added independance that it's given the girls. We can now send them upstairs to get ready more/less by themselves. It's as easy as underwear to get on/off for those inevitable preschooler 'I suddenly have to pee now that I'm all tucked in' moments (even though they just supposedly tried 2 minutes earlier).

| Although it makes diaper decisions easier, sometimes I might wish for an independent streak. They must not take after me in that way! I've been trying to teach my three-year-old how to dress himself. He hopped over to me to tell me that his underwear "wasn't working well." Nope, not when you have both feet in the same hole! |

LOL! That's too cute! My girls are usually pretty dependant for most things but putting on their pjs/diapers they like doing themselves for some odd reason. I think it's because they know they can fool around more if mom/dad aren't there right away, LOL!
