So, I've looked in the archives and found some similar questions, but none answered my question exactly, so, here goes:
My 11mo has been waking up with a fully soaked (like, it almost wants to drip) diaper that REEKS of urine in the morning. I'm talking knock-your-socks off ammonia as soon as you walk in the room. He's a fairly heavy wetter overall, but none of his other diapers smell, even after a long nap.
The diapers do not smell when dry, wet out of the wash, or otherwise wet with urine. Do you think it's just his pee? (maybe TMI, but DH has very pungent urine, though he doesn't "go" nearly as often). The diapers do not seem to be yellow with urine, and he drinks a lot of water in addition to BM. It has just started being this bad in the last week or so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| that sounds like the same exact issue that i was having with my son's diapers a few weeks ago. completely soaked knock you on your butt amonia smell in the morning and normal non-stinky diapers during the day. what kind of detergent do you use? what you want to do is wash the diapers, then strip them in as hot of water as you can until there are no more bubbles (usually about 4 or 5 hot rinces for me.) then dry them and see what happens. we had to switch detergents in order for the build up to stop. we switched to arm and hammer sensative skin. no more amonia morning diapers at all, although when my son has a soaked morning diaper now, it smells like an adult's morning urine, not of amonia, but a strong indescribable smell that you really cannot place. also try cutting down on the amount of detergent you are using after the diaper strip is complete. use about 1/4 cup. of detergent. |

| For me the key to cutting down on that stink is to rinse night diapers. In the morning I rinse her night diaper in the sink several times. And funny, the diaper doesn't look yellow, but the rinse water is dark! As long as I rinse night dupes I avoid the ammonia buildup. A good detergent helps too. Right now I am using Tiny Bubbles and it's great! |

Thanks for all the advice. I actually tried a different diaper last night. I have some MEOS I bought used that I've been using overnight and organic cotton and bamboo ones I use during the day. I used one of the organic ones last night, and while it smelled, it didn't smell anywhere near as intense, so maybe it's a lack of buildup of pee.
I think I'll try the rinsing first. I use Country Save (though considering switching to Rockin' Green), and only use 1 Tbsp. in my front-loader. I do a lot of rinses with my HE, but maybe I need to add one more... |

| i forgot to mention that i rince his night diapers as well. perhaps the smell that you are smelling now is the smell that i described above. rockin' green is a bit out of my price range, otherwise i would switch to it. |

| Stephanie I'm so glad you brought this up b/c mine are stinky too. I might need to switch detergents. |

|
| Stephanie - aer you saying Country Save is no good? It's rated 4 stars in the detergent listing. |

|
|
| I've been using Country Save (HE powder; though I really like the smell of the liquid it's not HE)) for not quite two years now and have done fine with it, but detergents that work great for one person might not be golden for another because of different water and washer types. |

aavt - I have a front loader and a water softener. What do you have? I noticed London Drugs has Country Save HE powder on sale this week so wondering if I should pick some up. Thanks! |

| I have a front loader. I suspect that our water is slightly hard, but not terribly so, certainly not in need of softening. I would imagine that your softened hard water adds to the challenge of figuring out a good detergent--good luck! |

Thanks for all the insight. My current plan is to start rinsing all very wet diapers. I've also added an additional cold-cold short wash with a fast spin to the beginning of my diaper washing routine to help rinse out any built-up urine. We'll see how it goes. My LO has the stomach virus that's going around, so there's been less urine the past couple of days (but plenty of the other to make up; just not the same smell!!).
I'll update on how it goes. |
