Hi everyone.  I have a set of 24 large sandy's that are about to be brought into use again by my daughter.  I used them with my 2-year old and stored them after she was done with them.  I wondered if anyone knew how to get out the stains and how to make them look "fresh and new" again.  I used to wash them in Purex Free and Clear, but our water was super hard.  I've since added water softener to all my diaper loads and it helps the softness a lot.

I just wanted to know how everyone else refreshes your cloth diapers before using for a second time.  Thanks so much!  I just want these diapers to be whiter and softer than they are now.  Thanks!

Stripping them would probably help remove mineral and detergent build-up. Just put them through a 2 or more plain hot water washes (as hot as possible). Adding some water softener would be a good idea, you could also soak in a heavy vinegar concentration prior (the acidity would help dissolve mineral/detergent build-up). A lot of the stains will probably disappear after that since they may well be linked to the mineral build-up. If any remaining stains really bother you, you could try an oxygen bleach (ie Oxy-Clean) to get them out. Oxygen bleach should be fairly safe (especially that it's only once) and is actually recomended by some diaper manufacturers, but it's not recomended by Mother-Ease, just so you know.

Karen.

Ditto with Karen, and I will add that I was able to minimize some stubborn, heat-set stains by applying lemon-juice directly to them and then putting them out in the sun.  Not perfect, but much less grungy-looking for some diapers I was selling for a friend.

Thanks, ladies, for the great tips.  I am doing a little experiment.  I have 24 diapers that I need to strip.  I am doing the first 12 right now by running them through extremely hot water in my machine with a capful of water softener (no detergent).  I also soaked them before washing with hot water and vinegar.  I am on my 4th rinse cycle and the bubbles are almost gone.  I am going to dry them and then compare to the ones I haven't stripped.  I am hoping the stripped ones are softer and whiter than the other ones : )  Thanks for the great ideas!

Do let us know--I don't know about whiter, but would think they'd be softer.
