  wet bags (plasticallergy)

Ok, I am new to this cloth diaper thing so I have a lot of questions. What wet bags work best. I ordered motherease small wet bags but am wondering how the draw string closure prevents smells from escaping. I'm sure I will be ordering more and most likely bigger bags. I need some for me but also for his caretaker during the day, I don't want to stink up her house. Any recommendations would be great.

I find that the drawstring works fine at keeping the smell in, but I have to say that my daughter's diapers aren't overly stinky either. Just keep it nice and tight, and get the diaper into the bag as fast as you can when there are already dirty diapers in it.

I had drawstring closure bags and they worked great for us. We even went on at least 2 road trips with cloth and never smelled anything in the car. Both were for at least 3 days and we didn't wash while away (I think in both cases with used either disposables or G-diapers for nighttime but cloth during the day).

Karen.

I ended up buying Bummis wet bags (large?) for my mom to use in a pail at her house.  I picked up the pail from Walmart - with a tight closing lid.  Then when I pick up DS, I take the bag with me.  I wonder how big the large ME wetbags are.  I didn't think they were big enough.  I don't think I've noticed smell issues with the small ME wetbag I have when I'm out during the day.  I think having the mesh around the opening allows some air flow which helps with odor.  Pee diapers shouldn't really stink either.  I love the ME wet bag so much.  I need to order another one when I have another baby.

There are some threads on this forum about people's preferences for how to deal with diapers at a caregiver's/daycare that you might want to search, just for different options.

When I was out and had a dirty, I always kind of rolled it up to keep the poop inside that diaper and not all over everything else.  Eventually I started carrying bread bags and just rolling and sticking the dirty diaper roll into the bag and knotting it, then dealing with it at all later.  You will likely actually find that old poop is a little easier to get off the diaper than fresh, so cleaning these up isn't too bad.  If you find that things are getting too messy in the wet bag or that the poopy diapers are too smelly, maybe you could consider having those bagged before being put into the wet bag?
Other moms who've done this with caregivers may have better advice than I do on what specifically works well for them.

i don't mean to intrude on the topic, but i was wondering how your son is taking to the cloth diapers? is he having any allergic reaction to them?  or is his allergies gone? i hope that he is taking well to them. comfort over "throw away convenience," as well as not having to buy diapers every week is why i chose cloth diapers over disposables even though we had him in them for the first 5 months of his life. if i had it my way from the beginning, a disposable would not have touched my son's bottom.  disposables are alot more inconvenient for us anyway as my husband and i have to take the bus to the store because we both cannot drive.

Thanks for all the info. I did end up ordering a very large wet bag for my child care provider for planetwise so that we aren't using several small ME wet bags a day. My son is doing ok with the cloth. His bottom is still slowly healing from his last allergic reaction but it is making progress. We are being referred to an immunologist to address more concerns. The only thing I am having to adjust to really is how bulky his diapers now are under his clothes.

oh good, i am glad he is healing. to be truly honest, i really felt bad for him suffering in disposables.  i really hope that the cloth keeps him from breaking out again.   it makes you wonder what is really put into the manufacture of those things to make most children allergic to them.  also the bulkiness does not bother me because to me, it looks as if he is actually wearing something. disposables to me look way too thin and skimpy now.
