OT advice on PTing my 1 yr old son? (Fire Dancer)

hi all. we are in the process of getting my ds used to his little potty. it has a reservoir on the front of the little bucket thing i am assuming for little boy's pee to go into. so this morning, i took off his diaper and put him on the potty just to c what he would do. just for understanding, we have been putting him on it for a week with his diaper on just for him to get used to it. so when i put him on it without it this morning, he waited literally 2 seconds, then peed!  now here is the issue that i am running into. i tried to point his penus down so the pee would enter the potty, but the slippery thing would not cooperate with me and pee ended up in a puddle on the floor which we wiped up with a dry area of his morning diaper in front of the potty and only a little bit got into the potty. i had his penus positioned over the little reservoir thing but i dont think that he had enough room for the pee to go directly into the potty. any advice on how to remedy this?  and just to let everyone know, when he did pee, both my husband and i clapped and cheered for our son. we are both very excited for this!
so now when i go to the bathroom, i am going to take ds in there and put him on his potty with his diaper off.

fire dancer - that is awesome that he peed in the potty!  YAY!!!  I don't know how to get the aim either...I started with standing DS on the potty, first when we were out on vacation and then with his little potty but mostly, I stand him on the big potty to pee so I don't know how I will train him for #2.  Hopefully, he can learn that himself?  I'm very proud of DH too.  I never thought he would be on board with potty training so early but he tells me all about how DS pees in the potty after a nap when he's taking a flex day and spending the day with DS.    I started doing this when we went on vacation last summer when DS was 6 months old and then I wasn't consistent until around 10-11 months.  Now I always take him in the AM a couple times after he wakes up (they seem to pee a lot right after they wake up), after naps and before baths.  I won't hard core potty train until he gives me more cues but isn't it so cute and saves a few diapers!?  I also cheer after DS pees in the potty but I also say, that's ok, if he doesn't pee.  DS is 14 months old so you'll have to keep me posted on your progress.

Fire Dancer, I'm wondering if somehow your son's pee bounced out of the potty.  I had that problem sometimes with my older son.  He's somehow thicker front to back than most potties/toilet rings seem to accomodate, so we had a hard time making enough room for him.  If his penis were too close to the front or splashguard, somehow the pee could sort of bounce out or sometimes run out the sides, even when he was pointed down as best we could tell.  Once we found big enough seats and learned to position him as far back as possible, it went more smoothly.  I don't know if that's what's going on in your case, but just thought I'd mention it.

aavd, i think that was what was happening. i did have him positioned way too close to the front of the potty. we did the same thing this morning and 2 seconds after i got him out of his diaper, he waited until i positioned him on the potty and let go and guess what? every single drop of pee went in! i just took him potty again after his nap. he had a freshly wet diaper but i sat him on the potty for about 5 minutes or so. we played for a while as he was sitting there, and all  of a sudden, he stopped, and peed in the potty again! i am so excited for this! now if only i can get him to poo consistantly in it as well.

Yeah, I think it's just a question of positioning him a little further back so the pee doesn't hit the splashguard with so much "force"!!  My little guy is potty trained now but I am working on it with my almost 10 month old little girl...  She started pooping in the potty around 9 months and just started to pee in the potty last week...  It wasn't really planned, she just started grunting before she pooped one day and I thought to myself why wait and watch her poop in her diaper to just change it afterwards when I can put her on the potty now!  So i did and she pooped in it!  She's pretty consistent as she normally poops after meals, so I usually put her on after breakfast and after lunch if she gives me any cues that she has to go...  It's cute now as she's starting to say "oh oh" sometimes when she poops!  As for the peeing part of it, I just put her on the potty in the morning, before and after naps, before we go out or if her diaper is dry when I go to change it, and she waits until she's on the potty and then pees!  Then we all cheer and clap and she's so proud of herself!  Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share!

pichou - I am really interested in pottytraining stories.  How old was your DS when he potty trained.  That's so awesome for your little girl!

i am practically bursting to tell you guys this! i am not sure if this is a fluke, but my ds unsnapped one side of his diaper yesterday and totally shed it, leaving it behind on the floor when he was crawling around the house. he has been going coverless for 2 days accept when he eats and sleeps. my son stayed dry all night last night and the moment i put him on the potty just a few minutes ago, he went, filling up nearly half of the pee catcher bucket that is in his potty! he didn't even go in his diaper!   the same diaper that i put him into after his bath is the same one that is still on him, and it is still as bone dry as it was last night. and as he was going, he was making really really happy baby noises. and after he totally relieved himself, he hugged me and fell back to sleep. so what do you guys think? fluke? or not?
my dh says that our ds is going through a phase. he says that i am really lucky for this to be happening at all.  nevertheless, he is extremely proud of our son as well. he also said that this might be the real deal too. so he is really undecided on weather this is just a phase or the real thing.

meisiu - My son potting training kind of happened overnight!!  He never wanted anything to do with pooping on the potty (not even sit on it with his diaper!), but the day after he turned 2, he looked at me and said "maman, caca!" and ran to the bathroom to poop in the toilet!  And that was it for poops!  For peeing, he had been doing it on and off for months, but he was completely dry (in underwear full-time) just before he turned 2 1/2 (again, an overnight decision on his part!)...  He still wears a diaper at night though and he'll be 3 in 3 weeks.  He usually wakes up once in the night to go pee, but the odd night (maybe once every couple of weeks, when he's really tired, etc) it doesn't wake him up and he pees in his diaper, so that's why I leave one on him at night still...  I find it easier to take off a dry diaper in the morning than to change him and his whole bedding in the middle of the night!!!!

Firedancer:  That's awesome!!  I really hope it isn't a fluke, but even if it is, it's great that he did it and that he was so happy about it!!

You never really know whether something's just a phase except through retrospect, so I say just go with it and celebrate it as long as it happens!  It might not last, but then at least you've got that groundwork somewhere in the back of his mind, and if it leads to potty-training, great!  Even if you're saving a few diapers and a little cleanup, hurrah!  We also just used diapers as underwear with my sons until they were really truly dry.  They can just wear the same diaper all day or until it gets wet/dirty--doesn't always work for older kids who really want underwear, but for younger ones or those without the underwear motivation, it's great.

Pichou, I totally agree with you about the night diaper.  My son is 3.5 and dry almost every night, but for those few nights a month he wets, I'm sticking with night diapers until he can go a clear month or more without wetting.  It's not costing me anything and he doesn't resist, and washing one diaper is a lot less work/waste than all the bedding!

another thing that i have noticed is that he is very receptive to using the potty after his nap and in the morning when he wakes. other than those two times that he is open to using it, he is too busy crawling around the house to want to use it. when i sit him on it to go during the day, he stands up and does not want to use it.  he would rather use his diapers during the day. any suggestions on this?

Fire Dancer, right now I'd probably just concentrate on the times that have been successful until those seem to be down to the habit level.  I tried some early potty use with my boys, but my problem was that they just wouldn't stay on the potty, and sometimes they really need to just give it a minute and relax.  That minute could be spent doing other things, though!  They weren't receptive to it at your son's age, but eventually my older son would stay on the potty for as long as I'd read to him there.  I don't know how reading goes for you, but if you have some story routines and he settles down for those, perhaps you could try using the potty just afterward?

unfortunately the double vision (print books with braille pages in between the print pages) picture books were sent back to the library.  so now i have nothing else to read to him. otherwise i would.

Hey firedancer!  Any updates on potty training?  DS is usually pretty good with peeing after naps and before baths and sometimes in the am when he wakes.

hi there. he has not been receptive to it for the last few weeks, but this morning, he woke up dry again. so i put him on the potty. when he stood up, i put him back on. when he stood up from it again, i put him back on it and told him that i know that he has some pee in there, and sure enough, he peed in the potty. i am thinking about pottying him when he wakes up dry in the mornings, vs wet.  what is everyone's input on doing it this way?

probably makes sense to put him on the potty if the diaper is dry.  sometimes, i notice that the diaper is warm vs cold so if it's cold, then he didn't pee recently and might go pee on the potty.

Just wanted to share my funny story.  Tonight, DH gave DS a bath.  I guess DS was standing outside of the tub while DH was getting it ready and he stood there and started peeing on the side of the tub.  I was like, oh, I've been putting DS on the potty before the bath and he usually pees.  DH did not do this so from now on, he will be putting him on the potty before bathtime!  Of course, could just be he decided to go.  At least it was in the bathroom.
