I'm thinking of getting maybe 12 more diapers to add to my 24 OS. My 2nd is coming soon and since I started cloth at 3 months of age last time I think I need more diapers for a newborn (I line dry).
My question is: should I just get 12 Small Sandy's since I'm fine once the baby stops needing so many changes? Or should I just stick with OS? Do you prefer OS or Small Sandy's on your newborn? Has anyone survived the newborn phase with only 24 diapers?
I ruled out XS Sandy's cause my last was already 12 lbs at 1 month old, plus I don't really wanna get another set of covers. |

Will you have another in diapers, or just the newborn? When I had my DS#2, DS#1 was still in diapers. I had around 40 diapers, and really, really, loved the OS because I could use them on both. I had some S and L Sandys, but actually would just use up the S Sandys early on so when I was waiting for diapers to dry I didn't need to have as many to accomodate both boys. If you will have only the newborn, then having some of both would make sense to me, for variety and because then you have the option of using the slightly trimmer S Sandys for certain outfits, or maybe its design just works with your babe a little better at first, or maybe uncle Joe would change that diaper a little easier, or whatever.
That said, I had 25 diapers for the newborn phase the first time around, and did fine with that, washing every 2, 2.5 days at first and also line-drying except for very rare exceptions. DS generally ate every three hours, though, and slept in between, so wasn't being changed as much as most newborns (including my second), and I didn't keep any spares for the diaper bag, etc. So whether 24 would work with line-drying probably depends a lot on your climate (I was in Wales, where diapers took at least a day to dry, now in CO, where an OS could probably dry in much less than a day) and your baby's routines. I'd probably vote for adding a few more, how about 6?, and going with S Sandys for variety. :-) |

Hello,
Just as a counterbalance to the last post, I had 24 OS and when I stopped using my 12 XS Sandy's, at about 2 months, I found that 24 was really not enough. I used the drier, but my diapers were bamboo, so I still had to line dry overnight after a turn in the drier. For convenience, I really liked having 36.
As for Sandys VS OS, I haven't tried the Small Sandys, but when we had XS Sandys and OS, I found it really frustrating sometimes adjusting to the two different kinds of snaps (when sleep-deprived). So that may be something to consider, although having variety and choices in trimness can definitely be nice. |

Just had my second, and this time around, have every variety of motherease for him (OS, Small Sandies, XS Sandies, and even a special-no-longer-produced newborn version of the OS). With my first, I had only OS, and they are fine on newborns, but certainly bulkier than the Sandies. I personally prefer the fit of Sandies (XS OR Small) on my small one compared to the OS fit. The small Sandies will likely fit until your babe is almost a year (unless you make monster-sized children like I do), so if I were you, I'd go for Small Sandies to add to my stash. As for the # of diapers, if you are going to line-dry, I say save yourself the stress and headache, and have more diapers rather than less (I have nearly 70, though, so maybe don't listen to me....) You can always sell them when you're done, and they'll last better if they get less wear. |

| I had 12 newborn dipes plus the one size. I prob only used a few OS in addition to the newborn dipes. I know I used less than 12 other dipes in addition to the newborn and I lined dried most of the time til it got cold. So 24 dipes can be done. If you want more, I'd prob go with small sandies cause they will probably fit better under clothing especially when little. I was tempted to get some sandies when he outgrew the newborns but couldn't justify the money since I already had OS. |
