CPFs, IPFs, or cheap dappi or gerber PFs? (Fire Dancer)

we are planning on becoming pregnant with our second within the next year.  i do not want to ruin my nice OS dipes with maconium stains, but i would rather a disposable stay as far away from this second child as possible. also i have heard that the leg gaps are pretty big on newborns and the baby looks as if it is swimming in the OS diaper. i am planning on using pfs, but which should i use? the dappi ones are really cheap, but i have heard not so good things about them. same goes for gerber pfs as well.  also, how would one use a pf?  actually, i just thought of something else. what about contour diapers? i do not want to be dealing with hard to use dipes during my PP period.  and i know this might sound really stupid, but what about diapers for myself? i wore the disposable pull up type for 3 days PP with my first baby because i was bleeding very very heavily and i had very little bladder control as well, but the diaper was hot and it stuck to my sensative area. it felt extremely papery and scratchy both on the interior and exterior as well. no comfortable cloth feel to it whatsoever. i would like for these to feel totally like cloth, none of this paper that claims to feel like cloth but does not. also i hated pulling the thing down to change it because it was pretty unhygenic because as i would step out of it, my foot would step in the thing.  what type or brand of disposable dipe would you all recommend for me so that these comfort issues are eliminated? i do not want to invest in cloth adult diapers because i would be using them for only a week tops.

I would try to find some cheap used xsmall Sandys or OS mother-ease.
It doesn't matter about the condition that much because new babies
don't need lots of absorbency. If you wanted to go with prefolds there are web sites that show how to use them or youtube also has some prefold how tos. Preemie CPFs also work on most babie in that first month and they are cheaper them the infant prefolds. www.little-lion.com always has prefold seconds for a really good price. And as far as contours go I think newborns need something that is going to hug around the legs and keep all that runny poop in.

I would get some newborn size prefolds from green mountain diapers, or the new diaper rite prefolds. Both are perfectly sized for newborns. Prefolds are very easy once you get the hang of it. Just practice on a doll or stuffed toy and you are good to go.

I haven't used prefolds, so can't really give personal guidance on those, but my understanding is that often prefolds do result in more poop ending up on the cover.  I think you can avoid some of that by using something like a Snappi (a three-part thing that holds the diaper together but doesn't go through it like pins).  I don't know how easy or hard something like that would be for you to use, but I would guess you could do it by feel pretty well).  Otherwise prefolds are usually just held on by the cover (so you'd want Rikkis, rather than Airflows, if you don't have a way of fastening the diaper itself).

That said, if you can figure it out, prefolds are a trimmer fit.  They also wash easily and dry quickly, and are probably a cheaper way to get more diapers, esp. if your first one is still in diapers.

If you already have enough diapers, you can make the OS work for you.  I used it from 6.5lbs with my scrawny preemie, and although the legs were not snug, the diaper did its job, and the OS will offer more absorbancy than a prefold (might not be an issue with newborns, really).  The OS will be much bulkier on a newborn than a prefold, though.  To keep meconium off the diapers I'd probably use fleece liners that I might just toss if they didn't clean up fairly easily, or maybe try flushable paper ones (anyone have experience with these and meconium?  I didn't have good luck with them and BF poop, but meconium isn't as liquid).

Prefolds are slightly less convenient in my opinion, just because of the poop issue. I found that no matter how I folded or fastened the diaper, poop ended up on the cover quite frequently. Of course this was also an issue in the One-Size sometimes so could be the problem was worsened just by something my babies did or whatever.

But really prefolds are a great and inexpensive option. I would recomend them to anyone who cannot or does not want to invest in more expensive fitteds. The nice thing is that they can be repurposed as burp cloths, changing pads (well the larger sizes anyway, the preemie or infant ones may be a bit small for that) and even cleaning rags. Some even use the smaller sizes for post-partum bleeding (bulky probably but when you're at home with a tiny newborn who cares kwim?).

All that said, I wouldn't worry too too much about meconium staining. I used cloth right from the beginning (except in the hospital) and had no staining at all. I had some disposable liners that I just doubled or tripled up on (to help ensure that stains didn't seep through) and they were fine. You could use fleece liners or even just any old fabric you have laying around the house (old t-shirts, old receiving blankets, heck you could probably even manage with a couple of holey socks!). Anything that you either don't mind if it gets stained or that you can throw away. Just make sure it's thick enough to not let liquid seep through and you should be fine.

Karen.
