Since my son is an extraordinarily heavy wetter, I have been looking for a cloth diaper with industrial absorbency, lol. I ordered two Sandy's introductory offers, one in small and one in large since I wasn't sure which would fit my almost-five-month-old and nearly 16 pound boy better.
They arrived yesterday and I tried them on him at once - esthetically these diapers are AMAZING, so soft and cute it blew me away! I knew at once we'd be keeping them just based on those two qualities alone, lol. But OMG the ABSORBENCY!!! Amazing!!! I actually didn't have to use a cover and he wore them each for over two hours before the outside of the diaper even started to feel damp!!! Hallelujah!!
I really, REALLY want to order a ton of these (I am over the moon about the absorbency thing, lol) but the sizing is the only thing holding me back. The smalls fit well, but seems like he will outgrow the rise sooner rather than later (his butt is close to peeking out in back). The large is great in the rise, but seems loose and poofy everywhere else. Thanks to the gathers at the legs and back they don't gape open, but just seem like they would slide down eventually once he becomes more mobile if worn without a cover (and the absorbency of these dipes making a cover not so necessary, at least at home, would be a major incentive in my buying more).
To my mind it seems we would get more mileage out of the Larges, but what if he slims down once he starts crawling, cruising, walking, etc.? So then I think maybe we should buy more of the Smalls...except that whole butt-crack-peeking-out might be a bit of a blow-out risk and with my desire for him to remain cover-less at home that could get gross. I'm on a limited budget and really want to order the diapers that we'd get the most use out of. And I really want to buy new this time, since he needs all the absorbency we can get him right now, I can't spare any to someone else's lint screen, lol. |

I've been thinking about this a lot but I can't really think of any good answer for you. At first I was going to say definetly go with the larges but then I noticed your son's age and that's fairly young to be starting with larges. They did fit my son when he was about 17lbs but he was older and quite tall for his age so it's probably a different situation.
But then again, seems like the smalls may well be outgrown quite quickly and may end up being a bit of a waste.... I don't know that I'd go for a whole stash of smalls at this point.
You could always get mostly larges with a few smalls for occasions when you need something a little trimmer? Or maybe fiddle with the larges to figure a way to close them tighter? Do you know anyone with a snap press that could add a snap or two? You could use pins but that would be ackward and would probably damage the diapers long term. Snappis would also work but again you might damage the diapers long term (maybe not though, maybe email Mother-Ease to ask what they think about using snappis).
There's always the One-Size that could be a good alternative and would certainly solve the fit dilemma. The biggest issue with those is that they are slightly less absorbant than the Lg Sandy's. They're more absorbant than the small Sandy's but perhaps not exactly where you need it. It's more absorbant probably because it has more fabric (in the 'wings' and foldover waist sections) but that wouldn't be particularly useful for going coverless since the outside/middle would be wet before the wings would be. Of course, at worst if the absorbancy is an issue (and it is for some heavy wetting toddlers mostly) you could always add a liner. Bulkier for sure but you'd have the absorbancy you need plus the sizing wouldn't be an issue.
Sorry, I probably just complicated things more than before... You could always try a One-Size to see what you think. Or maybe just use the large and small a little longer to see what you think.

| I agree with Karen that the OneSize (OS) would likely be more flexible for you at this sort of in-between stage, but also wanted to say that I had to make the transition to the L Sandys around 4.5 months (17/18 lbs or so?) with my first son. While they fit fine on the legs and waist, I started having blow-outs up the back, which is completely not normal with ME diapers, so I just knew that it was time. I did use mostly OS for my boys, but had a handful of S and L Sandys. My second son was able to stay in the S Sandys for nearly a year, but I'd guess that if you are seeing the S being already shortish in the rise, you really don't want to get too many of them, if any. |

| I have the one size diapers and the LG Sandy's. The one size diapers with a snap in liner are more absorbent then the LG Sandy's. We go coverless all the time. I just love the one size diapers. |

Thanks for your input guys! I already have 24 of the OS dipes with snap-in liners, I bought them used back when I was still pregnant with him (they were our first cloth diaper <3). They are so old, the tag is white with green Mother-ease lettering and some are smaller than others which I've heard could be the smaller 'newborn' OS they have looooong since discontinued if that's any indication of their age! Anyway, we do love them, but they don't absorb much. If he happens to pee right away in a fresh OS with a snap-in liner which I fold to increase absorbency right over his boy bits, before I even get the cover on, it's soaked through to the outside. Seriously that fast. But the Sandy's + liner stayed dry on the outside a lot longer, which is why I want more now, lol. After washing the large Sandy's did seem to fit him better, not that they shrank because I don't think they did, they just seem to wrap around him in a different way which makes them a better fit. So I will probably just buy more larges. <BR> Does anyone know if when you buy their regular quantity deal (buy 12 get 1 free) if you can mix and match sizes within that offer? I'd like to get a few more smalls but mostly larges. And if you buy 24 do you get 2 free or is it better to order 12, get one free and then order another 12 + 1 free later?
Thanks for taking the time to reply!!! =) |

Not trying to convice you to go with the OS, as you obviously can see how they fit, but I would imagine that the age of your OS is affecting their absorbancy. That said, the Sandys are sewn such that they have an extra layer in the soaker area, so they will likely be a great fit for your needs, especially going coverless, and the L Sandys does offer more absorbancy w/o liner than the OS w/o liner.
When I placed my first ME order, I ordered 30 diapers and received two free diapers. I'd ordered a mix of OS, S and L Sandys, and they guessed that I'd like one extra OS and one extra S Sandys, which was thoughtful, since you do need more small diapers. It was actually my mistake, because I misunderstood the offer (thought I'd get one of each 12 free rather than an extra one--pregnancy brain?). So if you do mix and match, you'll want to specify to them which type of diaper you'd like free, or they might guess wrong. To be extra sure about it all, you might want to place your order over the phone (which I wish I had, but I was in the UK at the time); their customer service is great. |

Your old One-Size are probably a lot less absorbant than new One-Sizes would be, over the years the fabric will have thinned so they'll have lost significant absorbancy. That said, the Sandy's is a more absorbant diaper even if comparing two new diapers.
For the deals I know that you can buy any multiple of 12 and get one free diaper for each set of 12, no need to buy them seperatly. I'm pretty sure the deal also applies for different sizes and even different types of diapers but you might want to check with them on that.
