When did you switch from PF to Sandies? (econprofessor)

At what age should I plan to switch DS from prefolds to sandies?  He's 6 weeks old and weighs 14 lbs.  I love using my premium prefolds with a medium bummis cover, because they don't leak (usually). On the other hand, DS always leaks through small sandies and size 1 kissaluvs unless I add a liner.

By the way, I started cloth when DD was 3-4 months old.  The sandies and kissaluvs worked great on her from the start with medium airflow covers.

I think the premium sized prefolds would probably fit him for quite a bit longer so I'm thinking you could keep using them pretty much as long as you'd like, maybe even till he's potty trained depending on when that happens and how big he gets.

But if you're wanting to switch to the Sandy's I would work on trying to figure out why they're leaking. Premium prefolds are more absorbant but I would still expect that a small Sandy's would be plenty absorbant for a 6 week old, heck I'd expect even an extra-small Sandy's to be absorbant enough for a 6 week old.

Since you've done this before I'm assuming you've got the usual bases covered like not too long between changes, no fabric softener, making sure the diaper/tag is tucked in etc... By leak through do you mean that it's actually leaking like onto clothing and such or just that it's saturated very quickly?

Hmmm, I don't know, I guess he could just be a super peeer... Unless you really dislike the prefolds for another reason or you can find a quick/easy solution to the Sandy's, I'd just be tempted to not mess with a good thing. If he's a big enough boy you could switch to the large Sandy's in a few months and perhaps they'd work better since they're bigger/more absorbant.

I originally planned to use my sandies & kissaluvs exclusively, and I only tried the prefolds when I had repeated leakage problems. Before his birth I had been bragging about how cloth diaps don't have blowouts the same way that plastic diaps do. Oops! In the first two weeks his diaps were leaking at the leg or waist any time he slept more than two hours! I had wet and poopy leaks onto his clothing and blankets. Not as bad as disposables, but I hated changing him in the middle of the night (when I wanted to fall back to sleep, lol). I ruled out the usual culprits of leaking: fit, diaper build-up, diaper showing. The same covers that worked with the pfs were leaking with the sandies. I think he's just a super-soaker.

DH prefers the sandies and kl's, so I'm glad they work out with a diaper doubler. I prefer the pf's since they absorb so well. I bit the bullet and purchased two more bummis covers to use with the pfs. I suppose if the pfs continue to work better for me then I might sell off the rest of my small stash. I'll keep the large sandies and pockets for when he gets older.

Hmmm, well if it`s only happening overnight and over 2 hour changes then I don`t think it`s very surprising that he needs an extra liner, sounds fairly normal to me. From what I remember of premium prefolds they`re quite a bit bigger (they`re technically meant for babies from 15-30lbs) so quite a bit more absorbant. At that age I used to change my kids every 1.5 - 2 hours and if I went any longer the diaper was inevitably totally saturated. It didn`t leak but if they`d peed just one more time it probably would have.

But hey if the prefolds are simpler to use then just go with what works. You`ll make more money selling the fitteds than selling the prefolds so what the heck!

Karen.
