Interesting Update about Diaper Rash (mratzlaff78)

Ok - for all of you who are following my diaper rash story.  Today I called my daughters pediatrian for the third time. The cream that they prescribed on Monday ended up making the problem worse.  So this morning I called and told them and they prescribed yet again another cream.  I went to pick up this cream that they say will clear up her rash in 2 days and it had a steriod, aquaphor, and murprocin in it.  After finding out that this cream is $182.00 I decided to get a 2nd opinion from a different doctor.

This other pediatrian had me start from the begininng and tell him everything from the day she was born.  (Interesting I thought)  The one thing I told him that he took notice of was the fact that when she was born she was believed by the delivering doctor that she swallowed some meconium while being born.  That evening she was born I remember the doctors checking her breathing and noticed that she was breathing 80 breaths per minute.

Long story short they put her on antibiotics to be safe and to keep her from developing an infection.  Our 2nd opinion doctor aka Dr. Jantz said that when antibiotics are given it is in a sense like a bomb going off in your body and killing all good and bad bacteria.  In my daughters case it did what it was supposed to do but somehow the bad bacteria took over her stomach and intestines and hence the reason for the 30+ poops a day.  Yes you heard me right...my poor baby has 30+ or more poops a day.  Apparently for a baby her age, 7 weeks, she should be only pooping at the most 4 times.

So the diagnosis is that she gets 5 drops of probiotics to help establish the good bacteria and get the the bad ones out of her and slow her pooping down.  Also, he told me to take a cotton ball of hydrogen peroxide and cleanse the sores with that.  At first I thought ouch, but she doesnt cry at all.  Then he said to apply neosporin.

I am crossing my fingers at this point in hopes that she is better by MOnday like he predicts!!

This is really interesting, and makes some sense--sounds like you found a sensible dr who was really trying to figure it out rather than just treat the rash.  I had no idea she was going THAT many time per day--poor baby!  Here's hoping those probiotics work!

Wow, 30+ times a day, no wonder she's got a rash!! Poor thing... Newborns and infants are supposed to poop frequently but that's bringing the term 'frequently' to a whole new level! Poop against her skin so frequently will definetly cause a rash.

I'm so glad you found a doctor willing to take the time necessary to properly treat his patients! It's rare nowadays to find one willing to invest the time for such an in-depth analysis but it sounds like he's on the right track. Treating the root cause instead of just a 'band-aid' solution. And a darned expensive 'band-aid' at that!!

Karen.
