How bad is bleach just once? (Jacks1st)

My daughter has a rash that has come back, I tried tea tree oil to get rid of the bacteria that caused the rash and I thought might be 'living' in the diapers. But her rash is back, again, and I'm thinking maybe we'll try bleach. So how bad is it just once? Do you think her rash might be coming back because of something else, and maybe it's not the diapers?
Thanks.

Maybe you could tell us where the rash is and what it looks like?  Do you use any sort of liner?  What's your wash routine and what detergent are you using?  Do the diapers have any sort of smell (other than the obvious)?

I wouldn't recomend using it when first looking for an answer to a rash, there are tons of other solutions much less likely to damage the diapers (not to say anything of being more eco-friendly and less hazardous to have around the house). A recurring rash could happen for any number of reasons, some having to do with the diapers (ie detergent build-up, sensitivity to the detergent, reaction to polyester to name a few), others having nothing to do with them (diet, too long in wet or poopy diaper, yeast etc...). Yeast rashes are fairly common and can be quite difficult to get rid of without an anti-fungal of some sort. It's also the kind of thing that you sometimes have to treat both the skin and the diapers at the same time because of the possibility of passing it back/forth between skin and diapers. It's not always like that (many succeed in treating yeast rashes while doing nothing special with their diapers) but it's a possibility. I'd suggest maybe posting details of the rash, your wash routine and what you've tried to see if someone can offer some helpful advice.

All that said, if you've tried everything else and nothing else works, I do believe that using a little bit of bleach (either once or even a small amount every so often) isn't the end of the world. If done carefully it won't cause your diapers to disintegrate instantly or anything (the more you use the higher the chances that it will damage them but one cautious use probably won't do very much). And I do believe it's better than turning to disposables if that's the only other option you feel you have. Just be careful to ensure that undiluted bleach never comes in direct contact with the fabric. I wouldn't even rely on a washing machine's bleach dispenser, I would dilute the bleach myself before ever putting it in the washer. If you have a top loader and it's not too much trouble I would fill the machine at least half full with water, add bleach and then add diapers. It's more complicated in a front loader but I'd dilute as much as possible before adding to the bleach dispenser... And then rinse very well before drying (to make sure bleach residue doesn't irritate skin and to help ensure the residue doesn't continue eating away at fabric).

Karen.

Ok - I wash with hot water, 3 soap nuts. I do a cold rinse, hot wash, cold rinse and dry. I have a top loader. My diapers don't have a smell to them, they smell "clean", for lack of smell.

My husband took her to the doctor today, and he gave her cream for a bacteria rash.

The rash looks like small red pimples with little white heads. The heads disappear and then red pimples remain.

I think I need to change her more often. I've been changing her every 2.5 hours, and then going about 13 hours at night in one diaper. The rash is worst in the morning, and gets better through the day.

At night she wears two absorbant liners inside her onessize, plus a stay dry liner. Any ideas as to how to keep her dryer at night? Maybe fleece on top of the stay dry? (I've heard people rave about fleece...). Short of changing her in the middle of the night (which I could do as I'm up at 1 and 4 feeding my new babe), I'm not sure how to keep her dryer...

Fleece won't do anything stay-dry isn't doing; it's just popular here because it's a cheaper alternative.
I agree that changing more often is a good goal, since that's never going to hurt.  Honestly, that's about how often I usually changed my boys once they got a little older, but esp. when you're dealing with a rash, the more frequent the better.
Do you use stay-dry liners during the day, or only at night?  I ask because there have been people on the forum from time to time who have reported that using a liner like the stay-dry or fleece can cause problems, as their kids seem to react to the polyester (the regular diapers have some poly to them, but ME has their cloth woven in such a way that the poly is all on the inside, so it's only cotton touching babe).  It seems counter-intuitive, but maybe worth trying some time without the liner?  I'd probably still use a barrier cream, though, if she's still red.  I wouldn't think even a poly reaction could cause the pimples, but maybe if it makes her raw and then she's susceptible to yeast?
