  fragrant (!?) morning diaper (lwhite)

I have been using CDs for a whopping 4 days now (hooplah!) and noticed yesterday morning and, to a lesser extent this morning, that my daughter's diaper first thing in the morning reeks of ammonia.  I bought the MEOS used - does that have anything to do with it?  It wasn't as bad today, but I thought I'd ask before I forget and before too much time passes in case I should be doing something different.  Thanks in advance for your help.

My reflex is to say the diapers might have build-up. "Build-up" means that detergent residue has stayed in the diaper. That can happen when too much detergent is used in the wash cycle and/or the "wrong kind" of detergent is used. (What constitutes the wrong kind seems to vary between different families. I've seen the same brands receive praise from one and cursing from another. From what I can tell, local water conditions and the urine content of the child both affect whether stink issues will arise from any particular detergent.) Fortunately, build-up can be rectified by rinsing the diapers in hot water until the residue is dissolved or rinsed away. This process is known as "stripping" your diapers and you can find lots of threads with instructions on how to strip diaps.

One other thought, when my daughter was around 18 months old her morning diaper always smelled of ammonia, even after stripping the diaps.

Hello, you don't mention how old your daughter is, but I know by the time my son started sleeping through the night (at about a year old), I found his overnight diaper really reeked in the morning! At that point, simply tossing it in the diaper pail and washing like the other diapers wouldn't do the trick, they would keep a faint smell even after a wash, so I started either rinsing the morning diaper (like I would do a poopy diaper) or simply throwing it in a small pail and covering it with water (like a mini wet pail for the overnight diaper only).

That did the trick and I never had lingering smell issues, so I figured it probably wasn't anything to do with the diaper or build-up, just that the pee was much more concentrated and plentiful overnight and the normal routine didn't cut it anymore for those. So you could try doing something like that, but if you do and they still smell after a wash, or if the other diapers (not overnight) start smelling like ammonia, then I would definitely strip them.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much. It seemed to be mostly that one morning, though others have been strong smelling as well, just to a lesser extent.  The sun has come out in Michigan and I am line drying them and that seems to help as well.  But I have also added a wet bucket to the laundry sink just for the 'special' ones.  Thanks for your help.
