a friend gave me some large AF covers. the pul on some areas of the cover seems to either have tiny pin holes, is pouress, or has thinned out. is there a way to rewaterproof the cover besides spray on waterproofing agents? please help! i did the wet rag test on the covers and all 3 of them lack the waterproofing in some areas. my dh thought i was nuts to put the cloth in the cover then press down and i explained to him that that was how the test to check watertightness was done.

About the only thing I can think of is to use them without pants on top and is situations where you can change frequently. If it's that the PUL is thinning (and this is possible with old covers) then they may still work ok if the diaper isn't too wet underneath and if there's no pants to leak moisture onto right away.
The only other thing you could try is to strip the covers in case of build-up. I'm a little skeptical of the possibility of covers getting build-up but I have heard about it before and the theory is that it could allow moisture to seep through. I don't know that it would help (and intense washing may even make things worse if the problem is general wear) but I thought I'd mention it...
Personally I would stay away from waterproofing sprays. I don't think they'd be very effective (even when used on outerwear and tents they need to be reapplied periodically so I imagine it would wash out after a few washes) and I'd be concerned about unknown chemicals being that close to a baby's skin. Not that you said you were going to try this but I thought I'd mention it, even if only for anyone with a similar problem who may be reading the thread.

hey karen. in fact, those are the covers that you gave me. i examined them a bit closer. the way that i look for fine detail on something is feel it with my lips. when i gently ran them over the pul where it lacked the waterproofing, i noticed that there are little cracks in the pul that worsen as the cover is stretched. since it is polyurithaine, i wonder if i can get some paint on stuff. hmmm... either that or i might just have to buy new covers when the time comes. sigh... also i did not want to create a new post for this, but we have a huge problem. our dryer worked fine when i dried the diapers a few days ago, but when i threw my pads and my bedsheet in there to dry this morning, the motor on the dryer is burned out and we are not sure when the maintenence man is coming to fix it. my pads have been sitting on the window sill all day and they are still damp. what am i going to do when diaper washing time comes around sometime tomorrow? i cannot line dry them. i can hang them in our bathroom over the shower rod, but it will take them at least 2 days to dry. i really really do not want to turn to disposables because of this matter. i mean i will if i absolutely have to and there is no choice in the matter. i need to find some huggies pure and naturals somewhere if i absolutely need disposables.

I kind of figured they were my old ones. Sorry they didn't last longer but then they've been through quite a few kids already... I bought these about 9 years ago for my first dd, then on my son (about 2-3 years each). After that I lent them to my brother-in-law for his two kids but they weren't super commited to cloth so while I'm sure they used them I don't know just how much. Then I used them for maybe another 2 years on my girls. So that's about 6-9 years of straight use minimum...
I really don't know about the paint, might work... If they're totally unusable then you don't have much to lose except the cost of the paint.
For the dryer thing is there a coin laundry room in the building or nearby?? Not exactly convenient but cheaper than buying disposables. Do you have a drying rack that you could put in front of an open window? Or maybe a friend/family member with either a dryer or sunny yard? Or maybe see if you can try an extra spin on the washer to extract more water? Not all washers have that option but some do...

wow! 6-9 years of straight use? wow... we do have a coin laundry in the complex but we do not have any change. we only have a debit card. i do not have a drying rack or anything like that. i do have a friend who has a dryer, but i am not sure what her work schedule is like since she just came back from singapore and right after she got back to the states, she got moved to a different department where she works. i could call her tomorrow to check when she has a day off.. man... this is crazy. and also, i was reading another post and someone was saying that older toddlers do not like the switch to cds? why would this be? i would think that soft cloth, even though it might be wet, would feel better between the legs than a mass of swolen paper and pee gel.

I don't think that it's a general rule that older toddlers don't like the switch to CD, I was just saying that I remember reading here some mothers saying they tried to switch and their older babies didn't like it. I assume it would have to do with the different and wetter feeling, as well as the fact that many toddlers hate change period. But it could also be that some mothers read more into their babies than there is to read, sometimes. I mean, if you are afraid that your child may not like CDing, especially if you're not sure yourself, you may see a small reaction (to anything) and associate it with the diaper, whether that was the real cause or not. But I'm sure it's possible for a toddler to genuinely dislike the change, too, if they have never felt the wetness on their skin up to that point.

this is true. my son did not mind the switch to cds at all. have u heard of the new pampers? boy i am glad that i switched to cds when i did. these dry max diapers are 20% thinner and keep the child 2 times dryer and many moms have complained bc the diapers are giving their babies severe chemical burns. apparently pampers replaced the paper pulp with even more of the sap crystals. sigh... how sad... and their new motto is something like, just keep playing. i would have to feel these diapers myself to actually see how thin we are talking. and p&gs shares in the stock market have dropped a great deal as well. hmmm... lets see... can it possibly be because of the new diapers? hmmm... i dont know...

Fire Dancer - totally agree - I was so happy to be using CD's when I heard about that last Pampers scare about chemical burns.

I just do not understand how mothers can put their poor babies through that and still use disposable diapers. i mean, i know that they are trying to manage their child's elimination needs in the best way that they know how, but i know that if my son got chemical burns from a disposable, i would switch straight to cloth rather than switching brands of disposables. that is actually what i did when he got horrible rashes from the pampers. this was before they came out with the dry max technology. those things would suck all of the natural moisture out of his skin and leave his bottom dry and flakey in some parts. i switched to huggies pure and naturals for a week while the cloth was still on its way, and then when the cloth finally arrived, he went straight into those. he did not get rashes from the pure and naturals even though there is no organic cotton on the inside.
