question Would anyone recommend the Training pants? (Marie8603)

I would like to know if anyone would recommend the Training Pants.  I have 2 girls that are just starting potty training.  We have a few times going pee in the potty but thats it so far.  Are they good/easy to deal with poop?  I have been trying disposable training pants but I think they still obsorb to much which makes them like diapers. Do they obsorb but still allow the child to feel the wetness?

Hello,

We bought several training pants when my son asked us for underwear and I thought they were soooo cute! Unfortunately they didn't work for us - which doesn't mean it won't work for you. Basically, they are made with an outside layer which is just like a ME cover, and a layer of terry on the inside. You put them on like underwear, so I assume poop cleanup wouldn't be super fun, although my son never had a poop in them - he wore them only a few times before we gave up. The problem for us was the training pant would absorb one pee (not a full bladder morning pee, but a regular daytime pee). So for him it was no big deal, he would pee in it and I assume he felt the wetness, but it couldn't be that much different from a cloth diaper. Then he would simply say he peed and ask to be changed. There was not much training going on!

When we switched to regular underwear, he had one pee in his pants and that was it, after that he basically went into the potty every time. But I know every kid is different and some people really love the training pants, so I know I personally will keep them for my second child in case it works for him/her. I really love the way they look and fit - it just didn't work for us. If you can find them locally (which was our case), I would buy only one or two to try before buying five or six like we did.

Good luck!

Well, I guess it depends what you expect out of the pants. They are waterproof and somewhat absorbant (although not even close to being as absorbant as a diaper) and for some kids they could just treat the pants as a diaper. So in that sense it may not 'help'. Although to be fair, the same could be said of *any* training pant or even underwear in some cases (my girls were like that at some points, if they had anything at all touching their bum they would treat it like a diaper, even just regular underwear).

I don't really think that helping with the actual training/learning is the purpose of a training pant though. To me training pants are to use in situations where an accident could be seriously inconvenient or embarassing. They're a kind of hybrid between real underwear and a diaper, something that's there as a back-up in case of accidents.

Personally I didn't even use them while we were home, I usually left them bare bum at home. I used them for when we were out of the house when I just couldn't chance an 'accident'. For example when at a friend's house or at a store... They could also be useful for someone who has carpet at home and wants to avoid messes or for someone who's child is in daycare so the naked/only undies method wouldn't go over as well.

Anyway, I would recommend them for situations like I mentioned (while at home I definetly recommend either going naked or just regular undies). The poop thing isn't too too bad although I admit that I wish they'd had snaps on the side for exactly that reason. But then most kids have pretty formed poops by the time they're ready for potty learning so for most it's probably not as bad as it could be.

Oh, and yes they'll feel the wetness. They're just terry inside, nothing stay-dry at all. Plus the fact that they don't absorb as much as a diaper means that they'll get soaked much more easily (so probably much more uncomfortable/icky than a diaper).

Karen.
