Hi,

My son is 2 and a half years old, and we have been using MEOS diapers with him since he was a newborn (we bought the convenience pack of 36 new unbleached cotton diapers for him). We love MEOS. Our son is almost potty trained by now and not using many diapers any more, but with another baby on the way I'm looking at our diapers and wondering if they will last the distance for one more baby.

The only problem I can see is with the binding on the diapers. It is quite worn, and has started to go through in holes in some places. I guess this is simply a normal consequence of nearly 2 and an half years of constant use. Still, I didn't read about others having this problem when I checked the forum. . . and some of those people's diapers had done 2 or 3 children. We have never bleached the diapers. We wash in cold water and use a gentle eco-friendly laundry detergent. We don't have a tumble dryer, so these diapers have always been line dried. I'm wondering if the wear is due to our hard water, or the exposure to a lot of sun on the washing line. Does anyone have ideas about this?

I've just contacted Motherease to ask if they would consider selling me some binding so that I can fix the diapers myself. Other than the binding, these diapers are in really good shape and I think they will easily survive another couple of years of hard work! Has anyone else out there attempted a similar repair job? Any advice? (By the way: I didn't buy very many AF covers -- 2 of each size -- so expected those to wear out from overuse. . . but they are still in great shape, and their binding doesn't look worn at all. I washed them the same way as the diapers.)

Thanks in advance for your response.
Rebecca

Hmmm....very interesting.  We're having the same problem with just under two years of use.  The holes are concentrated on the binding in the area where the wings wrap over the front of the diapers to snap.  I also followed the washing instructions and line dry.

I also had heard of ME lasting multiple children which is why I bought them. I'm relieve to hear that I'm not the only one this has happened to and you also have a huge stash which means that it not from heavy wear and tear on the diapers.

I have some diapers that I've used on two boys, and unless I pore over them, I can't tell the difference between those and the ones used for only one.  Neither bunch has binding wear, just a little thinning here and there that it's really noticeable unless you're looking hard on the older ones.  That seems to be more of the norm from comments on this forum, so I, too, am surprised that you'd be seeing this after gentle care and one child.
I'm guessing the answer is no, but did you use any additives besides the detergent?  Is your hard water softened?  Just curious, really.
Although I would suppose they're past a warranty period, I would still consider contacting ME, maybe e-mailing a photo of the wear to their customer service with a description of your wash routine.  The information might be helpful to them, or maybe they can also help you figure out what could have caused the wear.

I would contact ME customer service.  I have cotton diapers that are 7 years old and have been used part-time for 2 years and full time for over 4 years.  I, too, have to look really carefully to see the difference between these diapers and the newer ones I have.

And I have used Tide and dried them in the dryer most of the time!

As a follow-up, I was looking over my OS this morning, thinking that it's really probably tell to sell them on, and noticed that one of them does have a small hole in the binding, in the fabric covering the elastic.  I couldn't find anything similar on the other ones, but have to admit it made me a little sad!
