question how to soften my old CD again. (lucywong)
Posted: 4:12:57 am on 5/13/2010 Modified: Never

I used mother-ease CD for my son 4 yrs ago, they were soft and nice. I let my friend borrow them for used only on 1 child and now the CD are no longer soft. I wash them again yesterday using little ECOS and vinegar, and hoping they will be soften. I thought the vinegar will help as a softener but didn't. Please advice on how to renew my nice and soft CD again.

They'll probably never be as soft as they were when you first used them. Over time diapers lose surface fibers which makes them feel rougher (like an older towel for example), I'm afraid there's not much to be done about that.

That said, it is possible that there is a build-up of detergent and minerals that could be causing them to feel rougher than they would otherwise, especially if you or your friend have hard water.

I would try washing them again with plain hot water. If you have hard water I would add a water softener like Calgon. You can also try a vinegar soak if you'd like before the plain hot washes. Soak in water and lots of vinegar (minimum several cups, maybe even the whole jug!) for a few hours, the acid will help dislodge the mineral/detergent build-up. I'd put them through at least 2-3 hot washes to see if it helps. If during the last cycle you still see suds (pay particular attention during the hot wash part of the cycle, the hot water helps 'activate' suds more than cold) then keep washing.

when and where do you add the water softener? is that when wash the CD in plain hot water in the washing machine and add the water softener to wash together? or add the water softener to soak the CD for few hours like the way use the vinegar? please assist. thanks. lucy

If you have hard water (and no water softener) then a powdered water softener like Calgon can be useful. You can either use it when stripping diapers (basically plain hot water washes designed to rinse out detergent build-up). Or you can use it in every wash to help prevent problems. You just add it during the hot wash part of the cycle. Put it directly in the wash tub if you have a top loader. With a front loader I'm assuming it would probably be best in the detergent section of the dispenser drawer...

yes, I have hard water and using front load. do you know if the Kirkland Signature Fabric softener or the Enviro Fabric softener that sell at Costco will work the same as the Calgon powder? Please assist.
Thank you. Lucy

No fabric softeners aren`t the same at all. The Calgon is a powder that actually softens the water itself. This helps the water clean better, detergents work better and should help rid the diapers of mineral build-up by allowing them to rinse out.

Fabric softener does nothing to the water, it only coats fabric with a waxy substance to make it feel softer against your skin. I wouldn`t recomend using fabric softener on your diapers because in the long run it can build-up and decrease the absorbency, perhaps even cause repelling (especially if you have pocket diapers or anything with fleece or suedecloth). Some do use a little without problems but personally I just don`t think it`s worth the risk.

Calgon should be fairly easy to find though, you can find it in most grocery store`s laundry aisle. Soaking in vinegar should also help loosen the mineral build-up.
