We did not start cloth diapering our son until he was 1-2 weeks old -after the nasty first baby poop was gone. We also did not have a lot of cloth diapers small enough for him so we were part timing. We are now full time cloth diaperers.
My question is our next baby is coming in less than two months - we have xsmall sandy's all ready this time - our goal is not to use one disposable with this child - how ever how do we handle the nasty first poops. Do they stain the diapers really bad? Should we use disposable liners? We are having the baby at a birth center and they said we can bring our cloth.
I was just wanting to know how other people handled the nasty first newborn poop.

Meconium can stain pretty badly but I guess I was lucky with my twins because we had no meconium staining at all (either that or it sunned out easily when I hung them to dry).

But I can understand not wanting to take that chance so I'd definetly recommend the disposable liners. I'd even double or tripple up on them to be sure since it can seep through. You could even use them in conjunction with fabric liners of some sort to really give good protection. You could even just cut up an old shirt of some kind, anything you don't mind getting stained. And for additional protection you could make the liner big enough that it kind of 'hangs' out of the legs of the diaper, that way there's nothing that can kind of 'slide' off the liner if it shifts...

HTH, congrats on the next little one!

Karen.

i am happy that you are going to give birth at a birth center. the experience is absolutely wonderful! the midwives take special care to make sure that nothing happens to your lady parts during the birth. i had my son at a birth center with no pain killers or drugs. the labor was only 7 hours and 23 minutes and the actual birthing process took me 30 minutes. it was stress free and totally worth it to have my son in a nonhospital environment.  i was wondering about the maconium staining on the cloth diapers as well.
