  Stinky Stinky Pails (Jacks1st)

So I have 2 motherease diaper pails, and they STINK! One is 19 months old, the other is only 7 weeks old, and they both stink. It's not the diapers that stink (although it's pretty bad when I have to open it to put another dirty diaper in), it's the pails themselves. I've tried everything I can think of, from washing them with smelly shampoo, washing with vinegar, airing in the sun all day and nothing helps. I don't know what's up either, because it just started, and it's my new pail and my old pail (I could understand if it was just the old pail, but both are equally stinky).

Help? Any other ideas?

I've never used an ME pail (they didn't exist when I needed one) but my pails always got stinky if I put diapers directly inside. I think it's fairly normal since plastic will kind of absorb odors long term. That's why I got myself a PUL bag to act as a pail liner - made a huge huge difference. I still had to wash it out every so often because the PUL sometimes sweats a little but it was much easier and much less stink.

You could try putting hot water and lots of baking soda for a few hours, baking soda is great at absorbing odors. I found the sun helped a lot too, though it was difficult to get enough actual rays inside since it was so deep (it would only get a bit of rays in the bottom for a few minutes at noon and then the sun would shift...) but I found if I tilted the pail and leaned it on something it would help. Some kind of disinfecting formula might help too, either the stronger bleach type cleaners or for something more natural maybe some tea tree or thyme based sprays.

I'm not sure why the old pail would only start smelling now, maybe just because your little one is getting older and has stinkier diapers? Or maybe you've changed your routine a bit and dirty diapers stay in the pail longer?? Just guessing there really...

I use the mesh bags that Mother ease sells - You're suggesting something more like a wet bag? Is there one you'd recommend? Does it not get stinky too?

I'll try the tea tree oil as well. I'm actually washing more often than I used to, as I have to wash every 2 days to have enough diapers for both babies, when I used to go 3 days, so I'm not sure why it's stinky now either.

Thanks.

Yes, it's a giant wet bag that fits inside the pail. I've had a couple by Bummis and one by Mother-Of-Eden that I liked equally. Truthfully I've never really 'gotten' the idea of a mesh pail liner, I guess it would help with removing diapers but it won't help with stink at all. And ME says that it's to allow diapers to 'breathe' to prevent stinkies and such, but if it's in a closed pail then it can't 'breathe' anyway... My 2 cents of course, obviously if ME sells them it's because it works for some people...

The PUL bag would probably get stinky as well over time but the advantage is that you can wash it in the machine and then hang in the sun (and due to it's shape the UV rays will actually hit the whole surface, not just a tiny part). Mine would sometimes get a little musty smelling if I really shoved my nose in the fabric, but that was the extent of 'stink' I had.

We use a Bummis bag for the pail as well and I just throw it in the wash with the diapers so it doesn't really have time to get very stinky...  We have 2 so that I can always have one in the pail while the other is getting washed (they do dry very quickly so you could probably get away with only one)

I have been CD now for about 6 months and my pail does not stink. I wash every two days. Once all the diapers are in the wash I spray my pail down with a environmentally friendly natural disinfectant called Sanira Toilet Solution which I usually let it sit for a few hours or over night then I just give it a quick rinse out with some water. The Sanira solution is not poisonous or corrosive( it actually breaks down within 48 hours compared to other toilet cleaning solutions that need at least 30 days). The cleaning solution is produced from environmentally friendly raw material and is vegetable-based with coconut oil and naturally-occurring surfactant. So I use this a natural disinfectant for the diaper pail. So far is been working really well for me since we do not have a stinky pail.

I've always used mesh bags.  I had a small-opening front-loader, so the bags were nice for moving the diapers from the pail to the washer.  I guess that's no advantage over the more substantial bags, but you can make mesh bags really easily and cheaply.  I think where mesh has an advantage is if you wet pail, which I did intially.  Then you can hold onto the bag while you tip off the water, and use the bag to transfer the diapers (again, much more of an issue with a smaller front-loader).  If I used a top-loader, I probably wouldn't bother with a bag at all.  My pails went through a stinky phase, so I filled them with a dilute bleach solution, which seemed to do the trick.  I don't like using bleach, though, so started spraying them out with vinegar after each empty/rinse, and that seemed to keep the stinkies at bay.
