DS is 3.5 months old. We've been doing just fine with soap nuts in my FL to clean his small sandies and premuim prefolds. This week, I pulled the large sandies out of storage, ran them through a soap nuts wash, and started using them (at 19-20 lbs, he has already outgrown the smalls). To my surprise, his diapers started having an amonia odor and I found a few red blotches on his bum.
Sounds like build-up, right? But this isn't my first time around the block. I stripped the diapers and switched to soap nuts at least 3-6 months before DD potty trained. Also, I washed the diaps thoroughly before storing them. Even after stripping the diaps for DD, I noticed a strong amonia odor every morning, and I chalked that up to her age. DS is far too young for that explanation, besides the fact that the odor literally started with one diaper. This leaves me befuddled.
What could be causing the stink? Can "hard water" be to blame? |
