diaper rash after overnight CD (Linotte)

Hello,
I just started cloth diapering my 5-month old son and so far it is easier than I thought.  The only problem I've encountered is that after being in cloth diapers overnight, he wakes up with a mild rash on the front area, above his penis.  I don't even know if diaper rash is the appropriate term.  What he has are these red bumps, like very small pimples, on his front.  I imagine this comes from laying on wet urine-soaked diaper all night.  He always flips over to sleep on his tummy, so in the mornings the front of his diaper is very wet.  I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this and had found a solution to this problem.  I thought about putting diaper rash cream as a barrier, but then I got nervous after I read that diaper rash cream can ruin the absorbency of the diaper.  Anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, he sleeps with a Sandy diaper and two Mother Ease liners.  So far this has worked well in preventing any leaking but the red bumps have me concerned.

Thank you.

It could be from prolonged contact with urine. If so you could use a stay-dry liner of some kind. ME sells their own but honestly they're so easy and inexpensive to make fleece liners yourself that I don't think it's worth it. You just get any kind of polyester fleece and cut it to the size/shape you'd like. No sewing necessary as fleece doesn't unravel. You can use an old fleece blanket of some kind or just cheap polyester fleece you get at the store. The fleece will let wetness through while drying almost instantly so when worn between the diaper/absorbant liner and the skin it keeps skin dry.

It could also be a heat rash of some kind, has it been hot in your area lately? A more breathable cover (something like wool or fleece) might help with that as they truly let much more air inside. And contrary to what you'd think, neither is hot at all, it's actually cooler than the plastic in disposables or the PUL in most diaper covers.

But I'd try the fleece first to see if it helps...

Karen.

I second Karen's suggestion on trying fleece, but did want to say that diaper cream used in moderation isn't a problem for most people.  Stay away from things with fish oil, but the larger concern arises when people have to apply large amounts every single diaper change because of a skin condition.  For the average baby, who has diaper cream applied only when there's a rash or for overnight use, it's usually a non-issue.
