anyone know of any cheaper diaper covers that work well? (Fire Dancer)

the reason that i am asking this is bc my son is 2 pounds away from getting out of the ML AFs which are rated up to 27 pounds. the covers are getting very tight on him and he leaks out of them all of the time even with a liner.  i have 3 large AFs, but they have been in use off and on for 9 years by karen before she handed them down to me and there are tiny cracks on one side of each cover that go all the way through the PUL. making the covers useless. my dh was going to buy some scotch guard to waterproof them, but i do not feel comfortable with that.  does anyone have some large AFs that they are willing to hand down? or does anyone know of any cheaper covers that work as well as ME ones?

Sorry I can't be much help, but I'd post on the buy and sell forum to see if you can get some cheap ME covers... worth a try!

Generally speaking I think you get what you pay for in regards to covers (in my experience anyway, though granted it's been a while since I've experimented with covers so things may have changed). That said, there are some that may work well for the money. I've used Bummis in the past and they were ok (not as good as my Airflows but decent), but the cut is slightly different so depending on the size vs the type/size of diaper you may have to be more vigilant in tucking the diaper in the cover. The pull-up Bummis cover may give a good fit and I'm pretty sure they're very inexpensive. Pull-ups in general aren't as convenient as fastened covers (and can be a bit messy pulling a cover down if there's poop on it) but they are usually a good fit (cut-wise) over ME diapers and they're usually the least expensive type of cover.

There are also one-size covers out there now that could be an interesting option. I don't know how they fit over ME diapers or what the quality is like compared to ME covers but they would work out to be very inexpensive since in theory they can be adjusted from birth to potty training. You could snoop around diaperpin.com or diaperswappers.com to see if a particular brand you're interested in gets good reviews and what the fit may be like over a fuller cut diaper like ME.

I would also recomended posting on the ME buy/sell forum to see if you could snag something inexpensive there. You could also check out www.diaperswappers.com as well. They also have a FFS (free for shipping) section which could yield good finds.

Also if you know anyone that knits you could get them to knit you a wool cover using an old wool sweater - very inexpensive. Wool may sound like it's too hot for your climate but wool is so extremely breathable that it's actually a very good choice. Lots of people in very warm climates use wool... They are a bit more difficult to care for though, nothing too bad, just a bit more time...

Karen.

PS - I'm pretty sure the covers I gave you were XL rather than L. Just so you know for future sizing reference... Too bad they didn't last longer, they still worked when I had them but I guess they were just on the verge of expiring...

oh wow you guys. thanks very much for all of the info. i was thinking about wool covers this morning myself. is buying the wool and crocheting or knitting the covers  cheaper than getting ready made wool diaper covers? also, i have heard that wool covers still let a tiny tiny bit of dampness onto baby's clothes. is that true?  also will i have to use elastics if i make wool covers? and about the snaps too. will i be able to use snaps with this type of cover?

well it's not a air flow type cover but i've heard good things about Kawaii diaper covers. I only have their pockets (which i LOVE!) but their diaper covers are supposed to be pretty cheap too..not sure how they would fit over an motherease diaper?

as for the wool...yes it is way way cheaper to buy wool yarn and knit it yourself if you know how to do that!! I made one because i just didn't want to shell out the money to try wool. I was very happy with it..bought a pretty pink wool and made a pull up type cover..you can get free designs online. It really was quite easy to care for. I don't think you could put snaps on a knitted cover?? it just wouldn't work. However it probably would work if your a sewer at all you can make them from old wool sweaters. It would be a tighter knit and snaps might work on that? No you wouldn't need elastic...because it's knitted or crochet it would be stretchy. I did find that my daughters clothes would get a little damp...not really enough that you would need to change their clothes but you could feel a bit of moisture if she had been sitting (i only recall this happening with the knitted one i made and the ones from recycled wool sweaters...i don't think it happened with the Little Beetle one i bought but i didn't use it much so don't remember all that well)

good luck

Fire Dancer, I don't know what your budget is, but I've been toying with selling four or so of my L AFs, now that DS is using diapers only at night.  Some have been through one child, some through two, so I obviously couldn't guarantee their life span, but I've always have lots of covers and treated them well, so would definitely be planning on using with another child if we were planning one.  If you might be interested, e-mail me at avtil84 at gmail dot com.

I now use only wool covers with my fitted diapers. I absolutely love them! I have 1 Babybeehinds-less expensive,2 Aristocrats-expensive, but have NEVER leaked-1 Little Beetle pull on short woolie, and swaddlebees snap. Wool is the best for air circulation, it self cleans most of the time- I wash by hand in the sink for about 20 min. every week to every 2 weeks and lanolize once a month. I love the pull on shorties-no snaps to break, and no velcro to snag. The money investment was well woth it. My toddler only wears a diaper at night so soon I will have to part with these-but I will miss them-i love the clean small of the unbleached organic wool, and it is so soft. His clothes NEVER got wet during the day, only occasionally in the morning from all night, and never soaked through to the bedding.
I even did a speech in my college class on using organic diapers and wool covers-got an A! All these covers worked great with Motherease and Sandy's diapers.

Wow, Jennifer - I've never looked into wool covers before but they sound so interesting because sometimes I wonder how breathable the ME diaper covers are.  Only thing is that I use MEOS so it doesn't sound like they would work (Aristocrats)?  Do you change covers at every diaper change, i.e. and let them air dry?  I use the same ME cover for a day and then wash it and hang dry unless it gets soiled.

All the wool covers I mention work with MEOS-I have  ME OS cotton, Sandy's bamboo and cotton, also Drybees bamboo, Kissalsuvs hemp and cotton, and Babykicks hemp and bamboo. Any  cover with a higher rise works best-I like the Aristocrats and Little Beetle pull on for night-the wetness doesn't seep upward. Daytime any cover will work because you change the diaper frequently anyways and the wool only gets very slightly damp. I keep the same cover on all day unless poo happens to get on it-then sometimes you can spot clean it with a liitle wool wash bar in the sink and in a few hours, its ready to be used again. Then in the morining, hang the wet cover over the crib or such to air dry and it is ready to be used again that night. The wool turns urine into crystals and then it evaporates. It is also naturally antibacterial.
My baby got so used to the switch from ME covers to wool, that his skin will get red in the morning if I use a ME Airflow and not wool. During the day, even in 110 degree weather, his skin is cooler and not damp under the diaper. I'd say only 3 wool covers are needed. There are softer wool covers out there and some wool is treated with chemicals, so if baby seems itchy or red, it may be due to the chemicals, not wool iteself. Merino wool is very soft. Some covers have one layer, two, or three layers for absorbancy. Recycled sweater wool is usually not recomnended-it can be itchy. And be careful of wool with cotton over the elastic-it tends to get wet with urine and smell and stain-look for an all wool covered cover.
Hope all this helps!
