I wanted to let everyone know that I believe that the homemade laundry detergent that I tried (Borax, oxi-clean, and washing soda) is making my ME diapers leak. We have had several pretty bad leaks in the last few weeks that we never experienced before. I am switching back to All Free and Clear, which I used before with no problems and am going to try to do an extra hot rinse to hopefully strip my diapers a little. I am bummed that the homemade stuff didn't work, but I am planning on continuing to use it for our clothes, just not diapers. I'll save a little more that way.
Any guidance anyone has with fixing our leaking problems or using homemade laundry detergent would be welcome. I might try some soap nuts in the future, but I want to solve the leaking issue first. |

Honestly I'd look at other causes for the leaking. The ingredients in your detergent are all very common indredients in commercial detergents, they're all clean rinsing and none have ingredients that could lead to repelling (this is when something coats fibers and makes them repel liquid, leading to leaks). Not to mention that fitted diapers without fleece are rather difficult to coat to the point that they repel and leak.
Now, if your homemade detergent had grated soap in it and if you were using pocket diapers, then it might well happen. As it is though, I'd be very very surprised if those ingredients were the cause of leaks.
Is the diaper completly saturated when it leaks? If so maybe your little one needs more absorbency? This sometimes happens as they get older and pee more at a time. Or maybe it's time to size up in cover size? Even if they appear to still fit fine, many find that mysterious leaks end when they go up a size.
Try the stripping and switching detergents just to be sure, if only for your own peace of mind. But if that doesn't help immediatly then I'd definetly explore other options...

Karen, Thank you for the advice. I was actually wondering about the covers. The diapers are saturated, too. I will try going from medium covers to large and see if that helps, too. How long do covers usually last? I bought mine used, so my son is the second baby to go through them.

Covers can last for a very very long time. I had some that lasted through several years of constant use (we're talking 4-5 babies!!) and only started getting cracks in them when I passed them on after about 7-8 years of contant use. BUT I've also heard of some that buy them new and have them 'expire' within 6-12 months. I guess it depends how they're washed and dried mostly. Probably also how many a person how in their rotation too as that will after how frequently they're washed.
So, all that to say that the covers being used up is a possibility. I don't know that I'd say it's a likely possibility or not, but it's certainly not impossible. You can always test that out by pressing a clean wet towel or diaper inside the cover and seeing if any moisture seeps out.
If the diaper is completly soaked that could be an indiation that you need to change more frequently or need more absorbency in the diaper. By itself it doesn't completly rule out an issue with the detergent but I'm still skeptical of that because of the ingredients. If moving up a cover size doesn't help you can try changing more often or adding a liner. Are these the One-Size? They are a little more prone to needing a 'boost' even during the day. My girls were that way (when I was using the OS), changing frequently didn't do much because they'd just let it all go at once and just flood the diaper. Didn't result in many leaks (a few though if I didn't change the diaper immediatly) but the diapers were very very saturated at every change unless I used a liner all the time.

| i am having the same leaking issue as you are. it really depends on how much my son drinks in a day i think. like karen has suggested, do a leak test with the covers to see if that is the problem, but like her, i do not think that the detergent engredients or the covers are the problem. try using liners in the diaper and see if that helps. i am having saturation issues with my son as well and when he was in the mlaf covers, his urine would actually collect in those little pockets at the corners of the cover and flood out of it when i changed him. sounds like we both have very heavy wetters on our hands. and as far as the covers that karen was talking about, she passed them on to me and they still get used when his good covers are in the wash. i just put electrical tape over the cracks in the inside of the cover and it temporarily waterproofs them until his newer covers are clean. |
