mysterious bumpy rash that will not go away. (Fire Dancer)

hi all, i am sure that everyone is sick of me haunting this forum, but when i finally tackle one problem, another takes its place. now we are dealing with an absolutely stubborn rash that will not go away. the rash is tiny close set bumps only on one hip. it is not painful for him, it is itchy though. he actually has unsnapped that side of his diaper cover to try to get at it to scratch it.  my husband said that besides that rash, he has redness where the waist band and leg elastic of the diaper touches. i have tried everything. ajusting the snap settings on the diaper, letting him go coverless for the day, using what was left of my northern essence healing sav, using baby powder, baby lotion, and finally desitin (not the fishey smelling stuff) but nothing is seeming to clear it up.  i have not used these products all at once. i used them each individually to see if one of them will at least help. i wonder if lanolin cream will work? i have half a tube leftover from when i started nursing.  does anyone know what kind of rash this is?  i would let him run naked, but this is new carpet and we do not want it ruined because if it is, we will not get our security deposit back at the end of our lease. i tried asking my mom about it but she said that since the diapers "dont absorb like disposables do" that is what is causing it. i was thinking that the rash could be due to bacterial build up in the diapers because ever since we started washing in cold to try to save on our electric bill (progress energy charges way too freaking much just for normal electric usage,) we have been getting a horrible amonia stink. i read that besides from the normal build up and stuff, that it can be from bacterial build up as well. so i bleached the diapers last night when i washed them and this morning there was no stink at all. it was great to take his diaper off and not practically sufficate because of amonia.   his pediatrician saw the redness around the legs and waist when my husband took him for a normal check up 2 months ago as well and she immediately cried rash although it was not (she has never seen a child in cloth before mine)..but besides that, his skin was absolutely clear. this rash has been there for about 5 days or so.

an update on the rash. it is practically gone. all that remains is a tiny bit of scabbing around on his back where some of it was.  and after using lanolin which did not help at all, my husband suggested neo sporin. and get this, it actually worked!  i applied it at every other diaper change and within a few days, the rash started to clear up.  i still wish i knew what kind of rash it was though because he never had anything like it before.

If neosporin worked, it could be that it was some sort of bacterial issue?  If it were just the salve/moisture properties, I would think the lanolin would have helped.  I guess that could also be consistent with your concern about washing the diapers in cold?

Sound like ammonia burns to me.
I was told that you HAVE to wash cloth in warm to kill any germs and properly get rid of ammonia.  I'm not sure how true that is but when dealing with my little one's butt...I take no chances!
I "bleach" my diapers once a month with a bottle of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE and extra water (large load size when it really would be maybe a medium load) and I re-set it to rinse again when it's done.
This seems to get rid of all odors and a lot of staining!  Maybe it would help get rid of the ammonia too.

Just a tip, oxygen bleach will form hydrogen peroxide when mixed with water. So you're achieving the same thing as using straight peroxide but it's much cheaper (plus it's supposed to actually result in a more concentrated mix). Using oxygen bleaches or peroxide is slightly controversial (some cloth manufacturers highly recommend it but ME themselves recommend against it) but it does indeed do a good job of helping with disinfecting and getting rid of stains.

I agree that warm will do a much better job of washing away bacteria and preventing ammonia. Actually most people even use hot water so more power to you for being to prevent problems with just warm.

Karen.

I keep my water REALLY hot to begin with so I probably have hotter than normal warm water anyway!  I barely have to turn the hot on to wash dishes or shower.
