my daughter is 14 months old and I need a trimmer diaper for at night she is a heavy wetter and if I don't put a microfibre insert with a mother ease snap in liner and a bummis stay dry liner (which is microfiber and fleece on top) into her night time diaper she wakes up with her whole diaper and sometimes pjs soaking wet.... any suggestions that I can use to make the diaper a little trimmer so I dont have to up her pj size again? she is in a 18-24 month pj they are a little long but harder than heck to zip or snap up over the diaper.

I find it hard to know what will work for different children, so I have only some simple solutions to try...with my 1st son, I found switching to a 2-piece style PJ worked better when the night diaper had to be very bulky...you can also use different sized tops and bottoms if necessary. In an effort to avoid having to buy anything extra, you could try using 2 diapers over top of each other, and see if that is less bulky than having all of the liners.

Maybe try skipping the microfiber and replacing it with cotton, hemp or bamboo. I've heard that microfiber can sometimes be subject to compression leaking, that is when it gets saturated and you put pressure on it (for example if your daughter sits up in bed) then the liquid can actually squeeze out fairly easily. Microfiber doesn't absorb the way a natural fabric does (it only traps liquid between fibers as opposed to actually absorbing it into the fiber itself) so it doesn't take much to literally squeeze liquid out. Might be worth a shot and wouldn't cost much to try, just use 3 of the ME liners to see if it helps. Then if it does you can invest in something like bamboo which is trimmer but just as absorbent. The combination of a natural fabric that isn't subject to compression leaks and a fabric that's trimmer (yet just as absorbent) could trim down the diaper at night.

I also second the suggestion to try double diapering. It may seem even bulkier but some of the additional bulk will be switched to her waist/hips instead of all in the crotch. Just having the bulk in a different spot may help pjs fit better.

For the pjs themselves it really depends if waist size or rise is the issue. If the rise is the issue then a 2 piece might be better because you can place the pants a bit lower (hoping the top is long enough to properly cover her belly in that case). But if the waist is the issue then a one piece is best because then there's no elastic at the waist at all so no fighting to stretch the elastic over a bulky diaper.

But really if pjs are the only issue and you can't find an easy diaper solution then maybe it's worth it to just get a few larger pjs. Get big ones that you can roll the legs/sleeves and then all your problems are solved. And then when she's nearing nighttime dryness later on, I'd keep the pjs she just previously outgrew because without the diaper they may well suddenly start fitting again.

Karen.

We just used double diapers for my son when he started leaking through a regular diaper with multiple liners.  For a while we were able to use to of the ME one size diapers, now he's too big for that (22-months old, wearing size 3-4T), so we use a ME one size on the inner diaper and then another brand of one size or the ME large Sandy's that are cut more generously.  It just means that he needs an extra size up for diaper cover.

The double diapers seem to absorb more, and absorb a little more consistently, so we haven't had any major leaking problems since we switched.

I use Under the Nile with a Kissaluvs wool cover and I never have any leaking and my daughter sleeps 12 hours a night!
I buy the UTN at greenmountaindiapers.com

I use bamboo Sandy's with hemp liners on both my boys.  I add a layer of bamboo or micro-fibre on top of the hemp to help speed absorption and voila!  no leaks.  A bit bulky, but still a diaper that fits nicely under their normal PJ's.
