Okay, one last question!  Sorry, but I've never had a computer that let me handle being on forums before!

Has anyone else had problems with a Daycare refusing you because they were wearing cloth?

I took my DD to a local daycare and I hadn't even gotten out of TOWN and they called and said there was a "small problem"!  I RUSHED back in a panic only to find out they "couldn't" keep her there because I "had no diapers in my bag".  Having JUST filled it up for the trip there I was confused so I got a diaper out (I took them my AIO's...what more did they WANT!) and asked them what they thought it WAS, exactly.
I was told they would NOT keep a child that was "not properly diapered"!!!!!!!  EXCUSE ME?!?!?!

After calling ALL over town, I found out I can not take my baby to ANY of the Daycares around us!  Even the ones I wouldn't THINK of taking her to, refuse cloth-diapered children!  They kept hinting that it was "dirty" or dangerous or some such NONSENSE!  I was agast!

What is the problem?  Has anyone else had this issue?  Are YOU as outraged as I was?

Sorry, I'm getting into a good rant here...but I was really hurt!

Can't someone stand up and GET WITH THE TIMES!  Our planet NEEDS us to cloth diaper our children!
Maybe I should take my rantings to my local mother's club.  If I could convert enough people to cloth users...they'd HAVE to start taking us or lose some SERIOUS business!

That was my fear when I was looking into daycare.  Have you tried any day homes?  They may be more flexible.  Luckily, my daycare was new and didn't refuse cloth.  The workers were like, oh, we grew up with cloth diapers and CDs these days are so easy to use vs. folding squares.  I have been blessed with my daycare.  Of course, I had to tell them to make sure he was checked every couple hours but I feel for you!!!

Yes, I initially had some issues with daycare. Believe it or not, it was daycare that initially encouraged me to CD. I had been hesitant about CDing and found that so many daycares refusing to use cloth supported my decision to use disposables at first. I actually had put my son on a 7 month wait list (first 7 months of my pregnancy), and then, when we finally got to the top found out the center's new policy didnt accept CDs for ANY reason-not even medical (at this point, I think I became defiant b/c the center wasnt even giving me the option to CD, so I decided then and there that I would...and needed a center to support me). I was in a pinch and started asking friends for any daycares that CD. I found that a lot of churches and home care facilities CD. I was blessed with a great church affiliated childcare academy that is open minded to CDs (they said.."no problem, we check dipes every hour anyway, just bring the wetbag!") and breastmilk.

I don't have personal experience with this but just wanted to express my sympathy. I can't imagine having someone else dictate what kind of diaper I can or can't use on my own child, especially when I'm trying to do something ecologically responsible, healthier and more frugal!!

Anyway, just wanted to pass on some tips I've seen in past discussions that I thought were really good. When discussing the issue with a daycare provider it might be useful to approach this issue by presenting them the diapers and confidentatly saying 'these are his diapers' and show them how it works. Having someone actually see the diapers might help ease any fears they have of pins and plastic pants. Reassure them that these diapers do NOT leak (they actually leak less than disposables do), that might go a long long way in convincing them since most people have images of cloth diapers being very messy and leaky. Also reassure them that you do not expect them to deal with poopy diapers. Tell them you will provide them with a bag to put all dirty diapers in (perhaps seperate plastic garbage or bread bags for poopy diapers) and that you will take care of everything. They may think they'll have to start dunking or rinsing diapers, knowing that they won't may again ease their fears.

You may also want to look into what the rules are for daycare centres in your state. Back yourself with knowledge so you can diffuse any misinformation. Many are under the impression that they're not allowed to do cloth because of governmental rules. I think that's pretty rare (if ever happens at all) but you'll do better if you know the rules and can assure them that your set-up will meet government standards (ie there are probably rules about seperate storage bags or pails, that kind of thing).

Good luck,
Karen.

cloth unsanitary? what?  um.. sorry to bust your bubble there daycares, but rolling up the diaper into a little poop bomb and throwing it away is way more unsanitary then shaking the poop off into the toilet and flushing it, which is what you should be doing with paper diapers anyway. hmmm... i wonder if that is where all of the sickness at daycare comes from? all that stuff fermenting in the diaper geanies instead of properly being flushed away?

properly diapered? sorry again, but diapering with paper and chemicals is not the proper way to diaper according to us environmentally friendly and health conscious moms. paper and chemical diapers lead to all sorts of rashes and discomfort due to the extreme heated and airtight conditions within the diaper, not to mention, they stink way worse than cloth.

a suggestion to you. if by any chance you cannot find anyone to accept cloth, have you ever heard of tushies diapers? they are a totally chemical free and gel free disposable. they are much thicker than chemical diapers as well because of the absence of absorbant chemicals.  instead, they use nice soft cotton padding to absorb. you can get them by the case from diapers.com for $44.  you can reserve those for daycare if they are really set against cloth. i have not tried them yet, but am planning to on this new baby that will be born next year just for the first week or so. the way i see it, it is a perfect compromise between chemical disposables and cloth.

Funny you mention church based daycares, amb2j, because that's where my DS goes.

Like Karen said, some of it is an education process too.
