  Washing ME for storage (meisiu)

I'm so excited.  My little boy was saying PANTS through the holidays and hated his diaper so he is almost potty trained.  I didn't dream of potty training since he so wasn't ready when I tried in August.  He was in pants when we were home last week and then I really worked with him on Sunday and Monday.  He had 4 accidents on Sunday, 2 on Monday and only 1 today at daycare!  He just turned 2 on Dec 28 and what a great way to start the new year.  So now, my question is...should I wash the diapers really well, i.e. sanitize them for storage for the next LO?  We plan to try again soon but in the next couple months, I'm hoping DS is completely potty trained so we can put the diapers up.

I haven't stored my whole lot of diapers, but when I put my x-smalls away, I washed them in super hot water, and I gave them an extra rinse, and I hung them on the line to dry, trying to get the last of the stains out. I'm not sure if it really matters, I just thought I'd 'kill' anything if there was anything there, and then I sunned them so the stains wouldn't be there when I got them out again.

That being said, when I got my x-smalls out 14 months later for my second baby, I washed them in super hot water with an extra rinse before using them, just to get anything out again. I think I was nesting.

I don't know that it's necessary, but I don't think it hurts.

Yeah, I'd probably give them one last hot wash (or two) without detergent just to make sure they're really super clean. If you've had ammonia problems I'd probably wash them in detergent first (ie wash already clean diapers again). I don't really know that this makes any real difference but it does seem logical to want to make sure the diapers are residue-free (be that detergent or urine/feces residue) before storage.

You could also hang them outside to help get rid of any stains. I don't know where you live so if it's anywhere near me that doesn't seem like a great idea just because there's so little sun right now! It definetly takes longer but sunning in winter does still work. It would probably take too long to be very practical while you're still using the diapers (because they would be out of rotation for too long) but since you're not using them anymore then it's perfect. I once was getting ready to sell my diapers and had a few with very persistant stains and I decided I had nothing to lose by putting them outside even though it was the coldest month of the year! I more/less forgot about them out there for almost a week and was pleasantly surprised when I took them in and found the stains has all but disappeared!

Karen.
