In the past few months the ME One Size cloth diapers I use on my son, who will be 3 in 2 weeks, keep leaking. I've stripped them 2 or 3 times now b/c I thought that might be an issue. Do the covers start to leak after a while? We've probably have had him in the the Rikki Wrap covers for about a year. Or is his bladder just getting bigger and we need to use a liner? We are working on potty training, but have been using disposables lately b/c of this leaking problem, which is delaying the potty training process.
Thanks for any advice or suggestions! |

Hi there,
I would suspect that if your son is 3, a liner might well be necessary. My son potty trained at 2 1/2 and we never needed a liner in day-time diapers, but we used 3 liners at night! It is possible the covers could be getting too small, too, maybe on the rise? You could always take a look at the XL if you're using the Large. I would suspect that would be more likely than the cover already leaking (I have heard people talking about leaking cover, but usually it's after several kids).
Good luck! |

The covers can start to leak after a while (believe they are guaranteed for something like four or six months, not quite sure), but since that seems like more the exception than the norm, I wouldn't necessarily rush out to buy new ones. I have some L Airflows that were used for two children, probably at least four years continuously, and were still performing fantastically when we last used them a few months ago. Anecdotally on this forum, that seems like the kind of performance that most people see from their covers. That said, if you are seeing leaks in the middle of the butt area, that could be a cover issue. To check them, you can take a damp towel folded over and press it into the cover from the inside, and check for any leaks on the outside.
My guess, however, would be that your leaks are at the legs? It seems like as some kids get closer to PTing, they often hold their pee for longer periods of time, and when they go, it's a larger quantity of pee, sometimes with greater force, which can simply overwhelm a diaper that might have had adequate absorbency if the urine were released over a longer period of time (babies go a little at a time, for instance). If you aren't using a liner in there, that would be the first thing I'd try. |

| Good point about the size of the cover as a possibility. Sometimes that can be the culprit with mystery leaks, too. My experience is that the Rikki fits a little smaller than the Airflow, and I would sometimes have trouble making sure the diaper was completely tucked away from the spot that the legs cross over, as that is a slightly higher spot. That probably really depends on child's build and weight, though, as that was with my super-chunk. It might not have been an issue with my much skinner DS#2, but by then I'd traded in for Airflows! |

I third the above suggestions. When the leaks happen, is the diaper super saturated? If so I'd definetly add a liner. My girls were super soakers as toddlers and if we didn't have a liner in each One-Size it would be super saturated after just one pee and although it didn't *always* leak, it did often enough to be annoying!
If that doesn't help, I also third the cover suggestion...

I have had leaking problems with my covers, also. Some covers I bought used, and some new, but I have leaking problems with most. Since I love the covers so much and they keep the poop in, I still use them and just make sure to change the diaper often or, if I'm going out, I'll sometimes use them with a plastic Gerber cover over them. (ridiculous, isn't it?) I don't know why the covers have come to leak, but I am planning on buying a couple for my new baby, but am hoping I can prevent the leaking. |
