The Sandys can be used during PTing, but keep in mind that they do require a separate cover.  Whether they can be pulled up and down on a 30-lb child really depends on the child's build, but given the separate cover thing, I wouldn't consider it necessarily something that the child would be able to do by him/herself, more of the parent pulling them up and down.  Neither the OS or L Sandys really worked to pull up and down on my first son, but on my second, a skinny fellow, it worked fine (for me pulling them up and down, that is, he himself, now four, still is barely competent with regular underwear up and down!).
My second son took much longer to be consistent on the toilet, so I used his diapers, without a cover, as underwear, for at least six months.  I would pull them up and down, and keep them on all day as long as they were clean.  The benefit of that is that they can unsnap for poops, and they will keep a pee accident from hitting the floor (but pee will seep through without a cover, as moisture would through a towel).
The Sandys are a great diaper, but they might not be quite what you're looking for.  I'd think about ordering an intro package (not sure they're online with the Sandys, but you can call to order that), which comes with one diaper and one cover, to see if it is something that would fit your needs.  The L Sandys is likely the right size for you, but if you take your child's measurements, you can contact ME, either by phone or e-mail, with weight and measurements, and get their advice.
The training pants aren't nearly as absorbent, but would be more of something that a child might be able to negotiate.  They say they can contain one pee (but if your child isn't close to training, they do not have the absorbency to function as a diaper).

We went from CDs to underwear when we did potty training.  The elastic waistband is much easier to pull up and down in a hurry compared to snapping and unsnapping.

Personally I wouldn't recommend getting a diaper specifically for potty training. The diapers can be useful during training if they fit in such a way that a child can pull them up & down by themselves. If you will use the diaper subsequently for nighttime or for another child then that's different but I wouldn't recommend buying any diaper just for the purpose of potty training.

If you want something specifically for potty training I'd recommend getting the training pants. They pull up/down very easily and don't absorb as much as a diaper. Which is a good thing, you don't want the child feeling like they can just the pants as they would a diaper. It will absorb enough for trickles and maybe one medium-large pee, but that's it.

We went naked or with underwear around the house when potty training and then used either diapers or training pants when outside of the house (depending on what stage they were at - how reliable they were basically). I didn't care about potentially messes at home, but did want to avoid puddles when running errands or visiting friends/family. That's when the training pants came in handy.

Karen.

We started about 2 weeks ago with my daughter, and we've been using underwear at home, and the 'waffle fabric' training pants as well. When we go out, she wears two pairs of the waffle fabric training pants with an airflow cover overtop just in case. I didn't want to put a diaper on her, becuase I've been reminding her not to pee in her panties, and I thought the diaper would confuse her, because when she wakes up from her naps (in a diaper) and is wet, she sometimes tells me she's sorry she peed, and I have to remind her that she didn't pee in her panties, and that it's ok to pee in her diaper if she's asleep. I find that 2 pairs of waffle underwear adequately hold one pee (or maybe more, I'm not sure), and the cover keeps her pants dry, so no one else knows about the failure!
