question My 2nd baby is comming, PLS HELP! (janeshum)
Posted: 9:12:14 pm on 2/28/2011 Modified: Never

Hi all,

I have a 17 months old boy who is still on diapers and the 2nd baby (a girl) is comming on July.

I currently have 30 OS + 15 cotton liners + 12 stay dry liners.

As a asian baby, my son is relatively small (around 6 pounds 12 oz at birth)and only able to use OS around 3 months.

For the comming baby, i would like to use straight from hosp and I think my baby girl will have similar size or even smaller.

Can some experience mom or karen advise me how much extra diaper i should get and what types (Sandies- S or Xs / OS?)

Thanks!

My first son was 20 months when my second son was born.  I had a total of about 42 diapers.  I had 29 OS, with 7 S and 6 L Sandys also in the mix.  I thought the overall number was pretty good.  I had to wash every two days or so at the beginning, at least if I was going to line dry them.  I could go a little longer if I used the dryer for some.

You don't really need double the number of diapers for two, since you can fit only so many in the washer and pails, anyway.

My second son was a month early, 5 lbs 12 oz at birth.  When he was 6 lbs 5 oz, I got so sick of leaking disposables that I decided to give my cloth diapers a try.  Both the OS and the S Sandys worked perfectly on him, even at that low weight, and even though they weren't even really all that snug.  The combination of the diapers and the covers (I used both S Airflow and Rikki) was really enough to keep things contained.  I have to say that at that point, with two in diapers, I really appreciated the OS, because I didn't have to worry about having the right amounts of sized diapers as I was getting close to wash time--if most of your diapers are in the washer, you can cover both children with a handful of OS, instead of needing several of each size, if that makes sense.

That said, I did not care about fit, only function.  Since you didn't like the OS on your son until he was a little heavier, you might really like some of the S or XS Sandys.  Then you'd have a diaper you know will fit your little girl, and by the time she's outgrown them, you could likely diaper both children in the 30 OS that you have if you have to.  I probably wouldn't bother buying any absorbent liners for the smaller diapers.  They have to be changed so often anyway, that it's usually not relevant.  If you really needed something extra, if she goes for longer stretches at night before they're outgrown, say, you could always just lay in one of the larger liners (even if it's longer than the diaper, you can just fold it down over the top, as long as it's under the cover).

As far as numbers go, maybe someone else can comment with specifics.  Often people like about half again as many diapers for two, but if you are using a sized diaper for the smaller child, I guess how many you get really depends on how often you wash and whether or not you feel like you could use the OS for times like nights, when fit and look aren't as important.

Yup, I agree with everything already said. You could manage with what you have easily enough but if you want a more customized fit then I'd get the x-smalls. The smalls would probably work too and they'd fit longer. But then the x-smalls would probably fit a little better and by the time they'd be outgrown the OS should fit well.

I wouldn't worry about adding any other diapers to your stash except for those you think you'll want for the newborn stage. By the time both children are using the One-Size, your older one will be 2 and using significantly less diapers than your little one. And even the little one will probably need less as she'll likely have stopped pooping at night and will be able to wear just the one diaper all night long (with a liner of course). So by then 30 diapers should be good. Even with two newborns in cloth full-time I still managed fine with 36 diapers and usually even managed to line-dry (I did have to wash every day but with two babies dirtying diapers, the pail/washer gets filled that fast anyway).

If you do want to add to the stash after the newborn stage I would wait till the baby's outgrown the newborn diapers. That way you could see if you want to get more One-Size that will fit both kids or get something larger like a L. Sandy's (or maybe even some Toddle-Ease if he's big or if you figure he'll need diapers at night for a while) that will fit only the older one.

Karen.

My 2 boys are also 17 months apart and I had them both in OS and small Sandy's, and my youngest was 5lbs 9oz.  My older son can STILL wear small Sandys (he's 2 1/2 now.)  I did have some xs Sandys but they're just a smaller fit; the smalls and OS's work if you don't mind some bulk.

I'm sorry, my youngest is 15 months old now and we've sold them.  They are hard to find on here but if you have a few months I'll bet you'll find some.  You can also try the FSOT section of Diaperswappers.com, Cloth Diaper Nation, and Spot's Corner.  And there's a site called MyUsedDiapers where there's a lady in Canada who's always selling Motherease, and has more than she lists, like you can email her to ask if she has what you're looking for and she often does.  And Craigslist too; I get lots of good deals there.

Thanks all for your opinions!

So i have added 16 Xs sandies + 13 MEOS to my diaper system.

Can someone advise me the following:-

1. Whether this amount (total 43 MEOS and 16 XS sandies) enough for
2 in diapering? I would like to maintain a 2 days wash cycle. My
son uses around 10 Os in a day; If not enough, pls advise how
  many more i should get.

2. How much diapers will a 3 or 4 months baby use in a day?

Thanks for your professional advise in advance.

Personally, I'd think that's gracious plenty.  You'll obviously run out of XS Sandys before OS, but if you plan on using the OS for nights, etc., it should be plenty to allow you to go two days (or more).

Every baby's different, but I'd guess a 3-4 month old would use around 8-10 diapers a day.  If your older son is still using 10, then I'd guess 10 for your new baby.  At 20 diapers per day (assuming you're out of the XS Sandys by then), you're still okay washing every two days if you use the dryer for some.  You may also be able to get more time out of the XS Sandys by not snapping the thigh snaps.

Hey, I'm not sure what type of insurance you'll have, but I found some great policies.
